Something I'm proud to have accomplished, but not an experience that I'd want to repeat. - Lieutenant, Surface Warfare US Navy Employee Review

Pros

Most of the enlisted sailors and fellow junior officers will be some of the finest people you could ever have the chance to work with. The bonds that are created during stressful inspection cycles and deployments will last for years to come, if not a lifetime, and the stories you bring home are worth the trip.

Cons

The inspection and deployment cycles on a ship can be stressful and rigorous due to impossibly short deadlines and emergent tasking. This, coupled with long periods of boredom and downtime, can lead to burning people out, especially junior sailors.

Pros

Health Insurance, life Insurance, 30 days of leave, travel, tuition assistance, post 9/11 GI Bill, tax free shopping on base.

Cons

Requires extended periods away from home, work life balance can be a challenge, pay tends to be less than the private sector for skilled professions.

Pros

It is what you make out of it. You'll have good days and bad days. It's all dependent on your leadership. That can make or break the command. Medical is free, but can take a while to get seen. You'll meet a lot of new people and could travel around the world depending on your duty station. Education benefits and training.

Cons

Medical can take a while to get seen, unless it's an emergency. If you're single, the pay isn't that great, but you don't have to much to worry about for bills if you live on base. If you're on sea duty billet, your work life balance will be terrible.
