Depressing place to work at

Pros

Decent pay, good office location

Cons

The people running it are real cowboys. So many VPs who lack vision and strut around like they own the company, spending without regard to the current financial situation. The staff is encouraged to cut costs, and there have been many lay offs, but the senior management often flies between cities to have catered meetings. Nepotism is also commonplace as contracts are given to senior management's wife. No career opportunities.

Pros

Good job for newbies. Decent benefits, flexible hours, and health insurance. Good opportunity to learn.

Cons

Colossal administration that contributes absolutely nothing. Mind-boggling number of managers, many of whom know nothing about science they are supposed to lead. They do very little of actual work, while scientists are heavily overworked. Favoritism and cronyism is prevalent. No room to grow if you not willing to jump on a "yes" bandwagon. Inevitably, frustration sets in and it may not be worth it.

Pros

Flexible hours R&D projects can be exciting Opportunity to be located in a big city (Quebec, Montreal, Vancouver) for forest engineers

Cons

Poor leadership and lack of vision Managers seems to be overtaken by events Increasing technology gap Cumbersome and highly constraining admin processes Can be a dead-end job for R&D employees No investment in employees’ growth and learning
