Pros

Float is fully remote and promotes async work. It's a joy to have no commute and a calendar free of time-waster meetings so that your time at work is optimized. The product is interesting to work on and the team is diverse, smart and capable. It’s energizing to work with people who are based all over the world. HR does a great job with communication through the interview process. Onboarding is excellent and the vacation time plus perks provide for a an above average (for the US) amount of time off and flexibility. The annual meetup is a great opportunity to work together and get to know colleagues in person, plus they pick non-standard, interesting meetup locations like Lisbon, Athens, and Chamonix, France.

Cons

Managing timezones can be tricky. Sometimes an in-person call is the best option to advance the work quickly, but multiple timezones make it either impossible, or mean that someone has to be up late or early to attend. The workaround is to record a video message, watch later and comment async. This generally works well – most of the time it's actually a great option, but in some situations an in-person discussion would be more efficient. On balance though the benefits of working remotely far outweigh any minor inconveniences like managing timezones.

Thanks for the great feedback! We definitely love our team meetups - looking forward to seeing everyone in Osaka this year! And we hear you about managing timezones - pros and cons to it for sure but in the end, like you said, the benefits far outweigh the need to mange timezones for us! Well said.

Pros

- Lots of interesting work - Really supportive culture - Everyone is looking to improve - Colleagues from all around the world!

Cons

Only thing that came to mind is the equipment stipend for engineers is lower than I've seen in past companies and has no refresh, won't cover an up to date Mac which is a shame! That being said, rewards are reviewed every year, and the compensation is in general really strong

Pros

Float has been one of the best organizations I've worked for in the SaaS space. The org sets clear expectations for roles and doesn't shift the goal posts. Compensation is fair, and everyone on the team acts like an adult. The product delivers on its marketing promises, and is being developed with a clear vision of desired outcome that isn't beholden to a few golden goose clients. Float uses its own product as intended with an internal use case, which hasn't been the case at every tech company I've worked for--I believe this shows a level of self-trust that is important for employers to have. The workplace culture is accommodating of new work norms that come with remote-first family concerns and doesn't penalize employees for stepping away for a bit to deal with children, pets, or ailing relatives.

Cons

The biggest downside is also one of the pros, that management has a fairly hands-off approach. Work is very self-directed, with minimal meetings (there are still metrics to be achieved and OKR follow-ups). Employees and contractors need to be self-disciplined to make sure they are keeping up on what is needed without constant supervision, but this can also sometimes create a need for them to be extra proactive in following up with management about questions they have.

Thanks for this feedback! We appreciate the note about folks being proactive with managers when it comes to getting answers to questions they may have. The nature of async work does require a shift in behaviour when it comes to how we work and you articulated that really well in your feedback (e.g trust, flexibility, self-discipline). Great information for us to continuously improve!
