Heart in the wrong place

Pros

The accelerator is good. A lot of the people are nice. The whole business is founded on having "friends in high places" so it's good place to get intros for networking.

Cons

Nobody cares if you do good work. Telling ridiculous, embarrassing lies (to external people, new hires, and colleagues) is the most highly valued skill. People sit around laughing about the extreme lie they told, and get praised for it. It is always somebody else who take the consequences of their lie. This is why the good people quit or get pushed out. The dishonest people get scared of being exposed and create a toxic culture by their behaviour. There is no desire to actually build good, functional software or innovate businesses which add value to the world, only to keep telling bigger and bigger stories to get investor cash for mediocre ideas. These businesses will mostly fail. All decisions are made by the personal opinions of a mini political clique close to the CEO. The current group enjoys the power, but it wont last long because there is a blame-purge of senior management every 6 months, when the investors become unhappy and demand change.

Founders Factory Response

Disappointed to hear your experience, what we're doing at Founders Factory isn't easy - building and scaling 200 startups over five years. We strive to improve our process continually, run regular retrospectives with all our teams, and of course welcome feedback from all quarters. I would welcome you, and any other former colleagues, to reach out and speak to me direct about your concerns. I am surprised to hear that you feel there a culture of lying would ever be tolerated, and that our investors demand mngmt changes regularly when our snr team has only had one change since day one. Regards, Henry

Don't believe the hype

Pros

Working here looks good on your CV because they're a well connected bunch and get a lot of positive press attention. Exposure to great talent, particularly from the in house accelerator teams. Plenty to learn about the 'show business' of investing.

Cons

It's a revolving door. Unfortunately the talented people they choose to hire quickly want to leave, this has caused a culture that is in a constant state of depression. Their product development process is unfocused and the incubator side is really lacking when it comes to innovative, solution focused delivery and product leadership.

Fails to deliver on promises

Pros

Well funded, well connected and receives great PR. Having "Founders Factory" on your CV will open a few doors and you will get to meet some talented people with diverse skillsets. The company has huge ambitions and the challenges they have will test your resilience and make you learn under trying circumstances.

Cons

Management - Pressure to deliver to ever-changing expectations without the support necessary - half the time you're unaware of what is expected of you but will be held accountable for not delivering. - Managers refuse to accept accountability for when things go wrong giving rise to an aggressive blame culture. - No interest in developing their direct reports - they use their "startup mentality" as an excuse to ignore basic employee mentorship, training and development. Culture - Employees are severely undervalued and culture is not considered an importance - an issue which has encouraged many to leave the factory. - There are an elite few who have charmed their way into the CEO's/Senior Management's favour - if you want to succeed in this environment be prepared to brush off your showmanship skills over any real professional experience you may have. Lack of transparency and communication - For a startup there is an abnormal amount of politics, clique forming and gossip. - You spend most of your time chasing information which should have been communicated early on. - Communication is especially poor on the Product team (particularly due to its weak leadership), if you're here for Product - don't do it to yourself, your time will be spent on creating countless presentations which you will never get to present, and running around to appease corporate partners.
