I worked at GSM Systems (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Relaxed office environment
Good location within New York City
Management will be helpful if you go to them with issues

    Cons

Hours were tough 6 am to 4 pm
If you are not bilingual - limits the amount of work you are capable of

    Advice to Management

Hand out work on a reward basis, tough for employees to put in the ground work for someone else to close their deals.

I worked at GSM Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

International exposure to a cross section of business leaders, global travel and opportunity to engage different cultures, individual growth through results based account management, great team to work with as far as employees are concerned

    Cons

Inconsistency: Company values say one thing and directors preach that gospel but the reality is different because actions differ from the script- feels like an old boys club arrangement
Poor communication: decisions are arrived at from a textbook perspective- from reading what other people did or are doing. Their is no regard for the input from the staff on the ground who are best placed to tell you what the situation is and how to manage trends
Work approach is arcane: you are required to give your all for the company which is okay if you want to grow professionally and as a company. What is not feasible is how they demand it be done- you are basically to harass clients into buying from you. The powers that be have refused to evolve with sales as a service- it is no longer a heavyweight bout involving the number of calls and emails to get results but an intricate dance balancing relationships and solutions
The focus for a part of management is cost reduction: all profit is channeled back to HQ with no care for or trickle down to the teams that broke their backs to achieve it
Untrustworthy: as far as money is concerned GSM has a very poor reputation. They look for ways of getting out of paying commission and if one insists on dues they find a way of paying less

    Advice to Management

Every market is challenging and any sector you turn to will be filled with competition and the only way to counter that is to invest in your employees. You can make all the business decisions you want and give strategic objectives every quarter but if your client facing staff do not feel like part of the "family" then you only get people who work for a paycheck and not for your growth. You can do what you always do and fire people but that takes you even further back because now you have a new team coming in to start afresh while the old one take the talent and network built with you to your competition.

I worked at GSM Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -GOOD people/colleagues, open door environment
    -Free Breakfast
    -Great Location
-International Travel for Sales and often for Sales ops
-Good Base Pay (even though many compain in here, in reality you will not find a lot of places with base salary like GSM's)

    Cons

    - 6 am start time(due to company working only in international markets), so not a Con, more like a "must"
    - NOT Reasonable Commission Plan( GET RID OF IT, BEFORE you all of the talent that is left will leave)
    - Once hired as Sales Assosicate, no matter what you do and how much you sell, you will always remain as a "shadow" of some other higher Senior Executive , who has been with company for many years.

    Advice to Management

CEO MUST give more power and flexibility to management, and company will "revive"again.

    Pros

Opportunity to travel, use your languages and interact with people from many cultures. A true eye opener for smart people who are looking for a challenge, may be tough for entry level associates who have not been exposed to an international business setting. While there is new competition in the traditional infrastructure space where the company got started 10 years ago, its service contract operations in emerging markets gives it a much more resilient future than any competitor in the equipment space. Other reviews saying the company has a limited future must have come from a disgruntled person who didn't make the cut, and who was not aware of the full scope of the current and future growth path.

    Cons

Management in ny has gone through a transition in the last year so there was a shaky patch while the new team settled in. As mentioned above there is margin pressure in the core equipment business due to new competition. Now that a majority if the business is services management needs to step up efforts in training the whole team in services sales. Hours are early and can be tough if you like late nights.

    Advice to Management

More training on services sales, more focus on team building and career development. Get the ERP workflows running right and things will be smoother.

I worked at GSM Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Located in Manhattan
Get to speak to people all over the world

    Cons

In my experience, top leadership portrays one image but is very sneaky and does not deliver on promises. There have been many issues in regards to commissions not being paid or being short.

Competition has gotten very heavy and margins have gotten small.

This company has zero competitive advantage.

Very top leadership is most probably writing any positive review on here

Any talent on the sales team including its head leadership have left in the past 12-18 months

    Advice to Management

You always promote the values but only use them for your benefit and with no concern fairness to the people who bend over backwards for you. Do not force individuals into corners but help create a real community of support.

I worked at GSM Systems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company has the potential to have a great culture. Work hours begin early, but finish early as well. There is potential for growth, but management seems to inhibit this prospect.

    Cons

The company is pretty dog eat dog. Watch over your shoulder, as your "co-workers" are looking into your leads. Management is a bit unorganized, as are the team's goals. Commissions take a long time to be distributed. They have the outlines of being an effective, organized company, but there is not follow through.

    Advice to Management

Strengthen the training program. Make goals uniform for employees. Adhere to and enforce the employee handbook outline.

Interesting company with a great social mission.
Commission structure is a great incentive to stay focused and keep working hard.
Great team; everyone wants to win.

    Cons

6:30am start time can really be difficult to juggle if you don't live close by.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at GSM Systems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - International exposure/feeling connected to non-western world
    - Opportunity to travel to interesting places
    - Knowing that work done is saving operators in developing countries large amounts of money. Contributing to organic economic growth. Eliminating inefficiencies in the telecommunications world. I.e. work is meaningful and impacts entire countries.
    - Independence
    - Intelligent, ambitious colleagues
    - Competitive, fun working environment. NOT BORING.
    - Lack of bureaucracy at company (this is subjective--could be a con, but for me it is a pro)

    Cons

    - Work starts at 6 AM
    - Often stressful
    - If in sales, some days can be hugely frustrating, others can be hugely rewarding. A lot of up and down. Can be hard to reach people, barriers to entry, etc. Again, this lack of stability is subjective, for some could be a con, for others could be a pro. I personally like it -- makes things exciting.

    Advice to Management

    Doing well
