I have been working at General Dynamics Electric Boat full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Working with the navy is fun. Not many other jobs out there that you can say "I can fix a nuclear submarine".

    Cons

Managers and supervisors lie about promotions and growth. They don't understand the product and business model nearly as much as everyone hopes they should. Lots of work being outsourced to retirees and consultants that are returning to fix what they broke or because of who they left in charge.

    Advice to Management

Promote those with experience and stop offering leadership roles to individuals that can't describe the business model or it will become broken beyond repair. What are they really learning in the leadership groups? Its not how to build a boat or manage projects.

I have been working at General Dynamics Electric Boat full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The job is really stable. It has a lot of opportunities and a pretty low-level of entry to get into a lot of different areas. The older engineers are usually pretty eager to share knowledge when they can.

    Cons

Parking is pretty terrible. The people there are generally pretty good, but there's definitely been a culture developing where people are unhappy about being underpaid and underappreciated. It really appears to be a numbers game where they try to hire as many people for as low of a cost as possible, train them, and then keep them at the same salary grade for as long as they're willing to stay. The retention rates are...

I have been working at General Dynamics Electric Boat full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great job security and good workplace culture. Decent work life balance where time with family is encouraged. Plenty of opportunities for advancement for a motivated person.

    Cons

No telecommuting. Salaried employees still punch a time clock. Healthcare benefits have gotten worse every year for the last ten years.

I worked at General Dynamics Electric Boat full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good first step for an engineer out of college. If you are ambitious you can get a lot of work done for the company.

    Cons

The workforce has a disparate amount of people who have been there for 20 years. It's their way, or get out. All the work you do won't be reflected in your yearly review. Managers are greedy and don't want to share.

    Advice to Management

Take people out of power who are afraid of change. If you want COLUMBIA to succeed change has to happen!
