Bullied out by a bad manager

Pros

- At first, it seemed like everyone was supportive and kind - Apparent flexibility in how and when you work - Some employees have a lot of industry knowledge

Cons

- Incompetent, bully, two-faced, manipulative, ego-centric and micro-managing manager. They openly disliked me because I was disagreeing with them. Blaming for someone else's mistakes (including their own), no appreciation, double-standards - If you stand out for yourself or have a different opinion, you'll be bullied for that; not rewarded. They'll try to manipulate you and make you think like them. They'll make you feel like there's something wrong with you. They really don't like diversity. - Hush-hush culture - if you won't ask you won't know or you'll find out last or by a total coincidence. Pretending to be honest, but in fact, they are far from it. - Cliques - Pretend to be supportive at the start, but in fact, they'll make you feel not welcomed, they'll make you feel isolated like you don't belong - No processes (but they obviously pretend to have one), shambolic chaos, no deadlines, and suddenly asking for something to be done straight away. No respect for their employees. - Lack of collaboration - it's more like a 'who's faster' culture within the team. Outside of your close team, you get ignored. You're left on your own. - Back-stabbing, two-faced teammates pretending to be your friend, then reporting you to the manager (high-school bullies) - Expecting you to fill six different roles at the same time for a non-competitive salary. Expecting you to work 10+ hours, with no extra pay or holidays for overtime. Absolutely no trust - they ask you to fill weekly Timesheets - Lying during the interview and later on - I was assured that I'd be working on something innovative and that I can adjust the responsibilities within the role, which both turn out to be a lie. They also said that there are no meetings, when in fact I was stuck in daily meetings (which were unproductive) - Nobody respected the team I was in, you constantly need to prove your value and worth. People question why you are even there, and why they need your help. Your work will either be removed or never be released to the public eye. - Bullshiters, overcomplicating what's already complicated. Extensive, non-readable documentation on Confluence. Making it hard for someone with no utility background to understand the industry - Timezones - absolute chaos, trying to work with people with terrible communication skills, who are 11 hours ahead of your time. Making the collaboration impossible - High turnover rate - especially in a role I was in. People leave after a month or a few. I presume they might have been bullied out of the job too.

Pros

There aren't any pros at all

Cons

- People are leaving in their DROVES (approximately 1 a week) and no new people have been brought in to replace them. - Even long term staff, who've been here for over 15 years, have been quitting - Pay is nowhere CLOSE to competitive - Perks are the bare minimum - 9 -6 working day - Career progression is completely non existent for the majority - Half the business works on an in-house programming language. If you get stuck on Velocity, you can wave your future goodbye - Strict about working from home pre-COVID - Inflexible hybrid working policy - Restructuring every year, if not more often. Can't make up their minds as they yo-yo between approaches - You'll most likely be placed on a customer team, which means constant firefighting bugs and complaints and barely any proper coding - You'll most likely be working on the old school monolith products. Unlikely to ever touch modern technologies, that's reserved for a select few who get all the opportunities - A lot of stuff is siloed to NZ or Aus, good luck trying to get help from them - Constant micromanagement - Timesheets - Bland office - Culture is poor - Managers do not listen to their employees, if you complain you're labelled a problem - Would give zero stars if I could

waste of time/ not what it seems

Pros

Friendly work environment and good culture. Company seems to be doing well now, after a challenging phase. Office isn't too bad.

Cons

The major drawbacks are the compensation which is highly below average, and the complete lack of opportunities for career progression, it's not a place where you want to build a career. The utilities industry comes with many processes, most of which are very complex and require you to attain a certain level of knowledge, which if you are a software developer would not want to waste time on, not over acquiring technical skills instead. This also means a lot of time is spent on figuring out how something works, manual testing or reproducing, over coding. The amount you spend coding is very little in fact, and you mostly have to debug and fix bugs. Features and improvements are rare, this is definitely not the place for career growth and learning. Also not the easiest or best place for graduates. Management always talks about how they are working on remediating compensation issues, but in reality not much happens. Whenever they announce some bonus or salary re-calibration, despite doing incredibly well in your job (also reflected in reviews), it doesn't really apply to you or anyone you ask about/ talk to, which makes it clear that the company values their bottom line over employee satisfaction, even when they are doing well financially and growing. It's worth noting that the company had if not still has a very low retention rate, a lot of people come and go.
