I worked at HelpAge International full-time

      Pros

People you work with are generally good people

      Cons

Exception to the 'Pro' above are the members of the senior management team. Not all of them, of course, but most of them have horrible attitudes or just do not know what they are doing, or worse, they are both.

      Advice to Management

Leave to make way for more competent individuals.

      I worked at HelpAge International

      Pros

I was impressed by HAI in the time I was there. Staff are clearly very dedicated, and although the organisation is relatively small in size it punches above its weight in its policy work due to its clear mandate in working with older people, a cause that is under supported by other INGOs.

      Cons

Internal systems could be stronger however in a way it means that HAI is not overly bureaucratic. A lot of recent change processes but things seem to have settled now and there is a new CEO on board. Wishing them all the best in their important work.

      Advice to Management

Be proud of your excellent and dedicated teams and recognise them, especially as there are many very talented people who have been with HAI for many years, very rare in INGOs these days.

Look at how staff can be retained with better opportunities.

      Approves of CEO

I worked at HelpAge International full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Very clear mission focus, genuine expertise in organisation. Accessible leadership, reasonably transparent. New CEO built greatly improved Directors team. Small charity can do culture, means we get opportunities with real responsibility early

      Cons

salaries are low. Organisational culture at times seems very fixed, despite efforts of new CEO and DIrectors team.

      Disapproves of CEO

I worked at HelpAge International full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Opportunity to travel Small organisation with ability to provide range of experience

      Cons

Clueless senior management and CEO that has no direction. Very fast turnover of staff with an exodus of knowledgeable staff after new CEO started. Financial situation of the organisation becoming very unstable and likely to result in redundancies soon.

      Advice to Management

Value your staff more and reduce favoritism

I have been working at HelpAge International

      Pros

Fighting for a worthwhile cause. Great frontline staff. Great office location.

      Cons

CEO with poor management style. Too much infighting among directors. Staff get caught in the crossfire.

      Advice to Management

Sort out this demotivating hierarchical approach and improve the work culture.

I have been working at HelpAge International full-time

      Pros

Some good people. Good central location in London. Benefits non existent - or only for some with conflicting rules on working at home for example.

      Cons

Low pay. No opportunities for development. Excellent staff allowed to leave with no attempt made to keep them. An HR department that works for the Directors not for the staff. An unmanageable network making demands on the London HQ rather than supporting themselves. Trying to be too clever with their interpretation of Ethics rather than just having some and actually showing some vision. Unclear decision making processes...

      Advice to Management

New CEO is directionless, tries hard to be matey but lacks the empathy to really understand issues that need addressing internally. The drive is always to increase turnover, quality is not considered, lessons are not learned and money frittered away on unnecessary travel. Ever expanding leadership group has no notion of leadership - the answer to bad management is not more management. Pay is low, appreciation of loyalty...

      Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at HelpAge International full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

People in HelpAge are all very committed and passionate. A medium sized org enables employees to get wide range of experience

      Cons

A new CEO with no clear vision and poor management style means this organisation formerly on the up is now a sinking ship. There is a lot of discord among the directors resulting in quite poisonous internal office politics. Income for the organisation is declining and staff are less empowered to make decisions now as compared to when the last CEO was in place.

      Advice to Management

Increasing hierarchy is demotivating staff while conflict at the top is creating ever deeper silos. Earlier people worked at HelpAge not for the salary (which was always low) but for the culture and the cause. The way things are going people will start leaving in droves.
