      Pros

      Great non-executive team, lots of remote opportunities, awesome benefits.

      Casual racism, sexism, and other discrimination is permitted and was actually encouraged during my time at HI. One of the top execs made an incredibly tone deaf "All Lives Matter"/Blue Lives Matter speech at an all hands and received a lot of support from other executives and middle management alike. The company says that they are trying to "disrupt" the 401k industry but take every step to corporatize and mimic other traditional, outdated financial institutions. Middle management and other employees get fired without warning or reason, even when their teams are overwhelmed and overworked. Friends of execs are hired to replace them. Multiple teams have been moved from salary to hourly in 2021, and their work is starting to be either micromanaged or off-shored altogether. Job security is at an all time low. When I left, they hired a friend of one of the directors to replace me. They're paying that person $30,000+ more than they paid me. On the other hand, I've had friends who've worked in their position for almost 2 years and have only had one raise of $5,000 or less. You will not get promoted at this job unless you're buddy buddy with one of the VPs or chiefs. Also, the product is a mess. However, instead of fixing the automation, the company is trying to use manpower to make up for broken software and blaming employees for not being able to keep up. I also hear that the customer experience is extremely poor as well (due to the poor product, not the CS team).

      Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective relating to your time at Human Interest. While it is always difficult to hear that someone did not have a positive experience as an employee, we appreciate the opportunity to respond to your concerns. Fair and equitable pay is a top priority for our company. Over the past year, we have built a dedicated Total Rewards and Compensation Team to ensure that we have the right compensation for each role and level of experience. We are running pay equity audits, have thoughtful career ladders so that employees know how to progress and have a promotion process with HR oversight. It is true that over a year ago, one of our executives made comments at All Hands to the effect that All Lives Matter. It is also true that he deeply regretted his choice of words. His intent was to express our commitment to financial independence for all, however, he, like so many in the country at that time, missed the mark in an attempt to communicate that. As a company, we know that our work expanding financial inclusion will address some aspects of racial and social inequality. However, there is much more work to be done on these issues. The conversations that came out of that All Hands discussion helped us better understand the needs of our employees and helped us create more spaces for reflection and action. Building a system to provide retirement benefits for millions of Americans that don’t have access to a 401(k) through their work isn’t easy. It’s particularly challenging when you’re growing as fast as we are. While the rapid growth we’ve experienced over the past two years has prompted us to increase the size of our service team to serve a vastly expanded customer base, product automation continues to be our core focus, alongside excellence in customer service.

      Hardworking employees, nice office, HR team actually tries to put out some diversity and inclusion events whenever they're able to.

      Cons

      We had one exec team member go off the rails with an "All Lives Matter" spiel during an All Hands. Afterwards, the company sent out a half-assed apology email to say that he did not represent the company's stance and that they supported BLM, even though they didn't take any action or show support publicly. The entire company is at the whim of the revenue team and finds itself bending over backwards trying to put out features that bring no tangible value. The CEO is probably one of the most insensitive and unaware "leaders" I've had the displeasure of being around. He keeps claiming that we're an "in-office culture" and kept proposing dates to return into the office, despite people clearly being uncomfortable with the situation as there were no talks of vaccines yet. He weasels his way out of answering culture-related questions. Our Q+A sessions during All Hands are now highly moderated and they recently removed the ability of being anonymous. It's a deliberate act to ward employees from asking questions and makes it awfully uncomfortable to speak up. There are constantly changes and reorgs, and the company is seriously lacking in the product department. Lots of churn. Company feels like it doesn't know what it wants to be when it grows up.

      I want to thank you for your feedback, as I know it takes time and energy to articulate the challenges we face in building a high growth start up. Your experience that our environment is one that involves frequent change is helpful to hear, along with the other topics that you pointed out that relate to leadership, product, culture, diversity and feedback from employees. These are all areas we have been working on while running at a very fast pace trying to build an enduring company that we are proud of. We value employees from all backgrounds, and have rolled out programs focused on diversity (i.e. ERG’s including Lift Ev’ry Voice/Women in Tech, LGBTQ+, as well as lead/referral programs to help recruit more candidates who are underrepresented in tech, financial support increasing our donation match to $1000 so that employees can donate to support groups that promote racial equality and justice if they choose). With that said, all of the work that we are doing on org structure, product, culture and diversity is a work in progress. As a leadership team, we are learning together and rely on feedback and questions from employees (at All Hands, or via anonymous Lattice Pulse and Lattice Engagement surveys) so that we can learn about areas where we can improve.       Extremely toxic work environment. Leadership is inexperienced and promoted based on favoritism. Zero accountability for anyone in the sales role (RDs, PAMS or AEs). Experience and ethics mean nothing to the leadership here. The RD's cover everything up and the Sales leader lies to everyone, including the board. He states that: "A lead is someone who knows who HI is and wants to have a 10 min conversation with us about 401(k)". AE's are promised 45+ of these "leads" per month from the PAMs during the interview process, but then receive bogus names and phone numbers from expos and Home PRO magazines. It's a complete farce. AE's are really just cold calling every day, whilst the PAMS are celebrated and monetarily rewarded for fake leads. PAMS magically assign any "real"leads to their favorite AEs and completely bypass the system, with zero consequences. Quotas are completely unrealistic, especially when your RD is withholding leads from certain AEs and funneling others to their favorites. They completely control your financial success and celebrate the "AMAZING" AEs on team meetings that are literally being spoon fed. Do yourself a favor and don't waste time applying here. Take your talent and experience elsewhere. It will never be appreciated here.
