There is a reason why they have "we are the top 10" mantra

Pros

Glassdoor website is designed to often help the prospective employees decide if the company's culture meets their expectations. In theory it should provide honest advice, examples of past experience and factual-based arguments. Having looked at the past reviews and their dates I am under strong impression that positive reviews of Hydrock add no value but they repeat the "we're top 10" mantra something that I have heard often while working there. Arguments are flaky and resemble old fashioned propaganda of lie repeated enough times that becomes truth. My recommendation to prospective employees is to read between the lines, decide if MD introducing themselves is their priority over interesting projects and professional working atmosphere and then make an informed decision.

Cons

It is striking how unprofessional the company is from the day one. At very low investment they want to maximise their return, however this often includes basics such as good office chairs, software licences, training and even stationary. Pay is in the bottom range and lack of investments leads to terrible resource management. There is no funding for training in practice. I know that this depends on the department and also location and some departments perform incomparably better than others which leads to next argument. Lack of transparency and clear policy procedures. Each office and team has own rights and structure. Longer and outdated 40-hour work week which contradicts their ethos but leads to unfairness between the staff. The staff is well aware that this is not usual so certain individuals who have no problems with non-abidance of rules for example take 2 or 3 hours lunch breaks praising Hydrock's flexibility. The questions is how does it reflect overall working ethic and those who actually feel obliged to work the time they are paid for. Project sizes vary from tiny to small often unambitious, interesting jobs are delegated to very senior staff limiting the possibilities for career development of junior staff. Be prepared that when you decide of criticise them or offer advice you will be treated like an enemy. That also applies to resigning. Not only unprofessional but childish. Finally, they claim to have good social events which is totally untruth. Their events include dinner one to three times a year which gives no chance to get to know your colleagues outside of office environment.

Pros

- Working on some interesting projects. - Our founder (and CEO ) is passionate about the place he has created and he is visible and involved. - The annual challenge day is great fun and a good way to meet people.

Cons

- I don't think our CEO really knows how bad things are at the grass roots. - There is a big gap between the PR spin of this being a top 100 place to work at, and what its really like working here. - During an average working day the unprofessional whatsapp messaging within the Bristol team was really bad. There was lots of inappropriate sexist comments, pictures and bad language that made female staff feel uncomfortable. Nothing was ever done to stop it. -My bosses laddish approach and the rude dismissive way he spoke to most women was the thing I really struggled with. It made me feel uncomfortable. - There are very few women in senior roles compared with most other engineering firms. In that way Hydrock is very old fashioned. I know that many women feel undervalued and second class. - I was surprised to find a lot of people working here seem to treat it as a paid holiday. My boss used to turn up at work wearing shorts, t shirt and beach shoes. Many of the team followed this. It was so unprofessional and clients found it disrespectful. - A lot of long serving staff here spend their days chatting, in the pub going to events or supposed business development. That just heaped pressure on those of us sat at our desks who had to work even harder to hit client deadlines. This meant the work home life balance at Hydrock was poor. I felt taken for granted and overworked. - Pay levels are way behind industry levels. Lots of people leave to move to a rival consultancy for more. And bonus levels are poor so there is no motivation to work hard. I felt overworked and underpaid. -Career progress is patchy and shaped by the personal bias of divisional leads. They look after their best mates, not the people who do the work. There is lots of false promise about what you need to do to get promoted which when you achieve it is then not delivered. - I found Hydrock to be a unrewarding place to work. Whilst there were some great projects to work on, and some people were nice, I hated the sexist and unprofessional culture and the laddish culture. That's why I left. If you are a female engineer I would think very carefully before I joined Hydrock.

I'm disappointed and surprised to read about your experience. We work really hard to be a great place to work and that includes being gender diverse. I have plenty of first hand experience of our two offices in Bristol and have not witnessed any of the behaviour the title of your review implies. The majority of our increasingly gender diverse workforce (1 in 3 hires are women this year, which is high for our industry) give very positive independent feedback, which delivers awards. We have some great female staff in Bristol, including a woman who leads our largest national division (about a quarter of our overall headcount). I would like to know who your line manager was and will investigate your feedback. Please give me a call or write if you are prepared to share more to help us ensure nobody else experiences anything like you describe. Thank you, alexwraith@hydrock.com

Pros

Some of the employees are really great people.

Cons

Long hours, zero support, lots of stress, a CFO that seems set on destroying the company and its employees. Hydrock has a laughable wellbeing attitude, they preach it, but other than a few plants, yoga on Wednesday lunch times and the odd dominos they get when you have to work late, there it's very little they do to help their employees. It's a cult that some people seem scared to leave, even those that have had time off with stress and or got health problems due to the hours they work and the pressure they are under.
