Pros
The ICTJ employees smart people who care about TJ and HR issues. The ICTJ does some good work and has the potential to do great work. The ICTJ has a nice office in downtown Manhattan.
Cons
The ICTJ's internal systems were a mess during the 6 years I worked there. Everything - from program creation to pay raises and promotions to work planning and budget allocations - was political and was based on who you knew. Management often made decisions without including/alerting staff in cloudy ways. The organization lacked solid procedures and transparency. It was a hard place to start off as a junior staffer and move up. Once you were seen as an assistant, you would always be stuck in that role. There was also a lot of sexism and words like "bi***" and "c**t" were allowed in the office. There was also a huge gap between the salaries paid to junior staffers and the salaries paid to senior staffers. The junior staffers were expected to work really long hours, without being paid overtime, and promotions were rare. There was not a balance between work and life. It was work, work, work all of the time. They also took away lots of benefits and cut salaries, before making massive layoffs. The layoffs were SUPER POLITICAL. They mostly let go people who had been with the ICTJ a long time and done a ton of great work for the organization, many of whom had won the organization awards and tons of funding. It was all very shady and cast a bad shadow over the organization's future.
