Great Non-Profit in Marin

Pros

ICS provides a great opportunity for staff to develop case management skills while working with individuals with all types of disabilities. While there is a lot of training (all new staff are assigned a mentor) and supervisors are very available to talk things through, you get to operate pretty independently and take on a fair amount of responsibility. The experience gained can be really valuable, and has helped me in my pursuit of a Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy. In addition, the leadership at ICS (from the Executive Director to the Program Directors and other supervisory staff) are invested in the growth and development of all staff. This means that education is encouraged and if you have certain weaknesses (such as organization, writing, prioritizing, public speaking, etc.), you get supervision and support in these areas (especially if you want to develop). This has been extremely helpful to me as well. It is a positive work environment, and I feel good with my coworkers.

Cons

It takes a high level of personal organization to work at ICS. This is because clients have to be scheduled and paperwork must be completed, and a full caseload could be 8-12 clients. The office itself is fine, but it is a little too small for the growing number of staff. While I believe that pay is higher than at other comparable non-profits in Marin, pay in the non-profit world is not high!

Pros

*rewarding work with clients *supportive office environment *flexible schedule *the organization has a passion for its clients and staff

Cons

*the physical office space is a little small, but most of the work is conducted in the field depending on your position so it's not too big of a deal

Pros

First time I ever found a place where I can feel like I'm making a difference AND I like all my co-workers so much. It's just a unique place but I think it's because the agency is clear on it's mission and values; it's a work culture that values relationships and people. Supervision is strong, so even if you don't have a background teaching and training people with disabilities, you'll learn. There's regular staff meetings twice a month and special trainings given. I was busy raising a young family when I decided to return to work and found this place. The flexible work schedule was a big plus. I liked the independence and was able to start part time. When the time was right, I moved into full time work.

Cons

You have to manage your own daily schedule of meeting clients and being in different locations to do the work (but all in Marin County). This job won't work if you just like sitting at a desk all day, doing one thing. You also have to set time up in your schedule to do paperwork like monthly progress notes. So you're out mostly working out in the field and then stepping into the office to manage paperwork.
