Pros

Good colleagues and good organisational benefits

Cons

Unfortunately although the charity itself is great the management and people recruited in higher position let the organisation down. If you are in a lower position you will usually be disregarded. People who work at the organisation for 10+ years usually will get more favouritism or if you are at a higher position and know if someone in an even higher position. Nepotism is clearly apparent and department leads fail to hold people accountable when things are done wrongly or work is not carried out. In certain departments there is also favouritism to males and people of non Muslim backgrounds. As an organisation overall there is not much Islamic values being implemented as staff are treated poorly. If you raise concerns or ask for what is your right as an employee you will usually be disregarded especially if you do not have a high position in the department. Also field office staff are usually the most hardworking and dedicated, yet they get paid the least and potentially reiceve the less benefits. Where as some individuals in UK office are paid to a high standard but do not carry out the work, but due to nepotism they will still be employeed and not be held accountable. Islamic relief values are also not implemented, they focus on having this values in place but they do not show these towards staff.

Pros

Kind and friendly colleagues. Good place to work for (some) ethnic minorities, gave me an insight into what kind of org I DON'T want to work for :)

Cons

Not wheelchair accessible, backward cultural norms and views, incredibly backward on gender particularly. Unprofessional working environment, due to most people being employed as a result of being someone's family friend or relative rather than on merit. Large proportion of the workforce have been there 10+ years (usually the relatives and family friends). It does not feel like you're in the 21st century. Career progression only available if you're pakistani and/or conservative muslim. Lots of unqualified staff

Pros

Very islamic and culturally friendly environment Understanding and flexible manager Hardworking and dedicated field staff

Cons

- Very discouraging to work for an organisation that could do so much, but prefer to appeal to the uninformed donors - management is poor. The people at the very top don’t know what they’re doing or where they’re going. the organisation lacks direction and identity. - no upwards opportunity, especially for women. There are no female directors and only one female in semi senior position in the organisation. There’s a lot of misogyny and policing of women’s dress and behaviour. - nepotism and corruption runs deep.

Thank you for your comments. Islamic Relief has a long ranging ten year strategy which has been formulated to chart the path to where the organisation wants to be by the end of the decade. This includes having a more diverse and inclusive workforce that speaks to both rightsholders and donors. There are policies in place to prevent corruption at all levels and we investigate any allegations that may arise and take the appropriate actions in accordance with those policies.
