Pros

They're good at hiring Some inspiring colleagues Travel Good name

Cons

Main reason for writing this is that there are about ten reviews on here which I realized come straight from Leapfrog's PR playbook. It's totally transparent to anyone who's worked there more than a minute. I'm shocked but not surprised by that decision from the PR team.............. They are obsessed with PR. Especially the CEO. The size of the PR team they have is crazy for a PE firm. They're really good at selling a story but not too good at much else and it doesn't take long to feel like you're working somewhere unethical. Most of the recruits don't last long, which is sad because they get some awesome people on board. Theres also a lot of really dissatisfied employees who are total sycophants in public but whine over + over behind closed doors... doesn't make for much of a culture. Couple questions to ask when you're interviewing: what impact are you ACTUALLY having? No not the number of people your investments touch, the actual impact. Why are there hardly any senior women? Why are you asking me to take a pay cut when you're supposed to be making good money? Will I get to own my work? (They're actually putting in the job postings now that you 'might have to do photocopying' which tells you a ton abt how they value talent....but at least theyre being honest) If you're ok with their answers to all that, then by all means take the offer. But don't say this site didn't warn you.

I’d like to address some of the points that have been raised. As a high growth company, we are actively taking the steps to ensure we build a culture that continues to attract the best people to LeapFrog, and keep them. Our recently introduced annual employee survey and 360 review process provides channels to ensure everyone is heard and the feedback, both positive and negative is acted on. On the question as to why there aren’t more senior women at the Firm, it’s simply because there is no silver bullet. We’ve made recruitment of women in general, as well as senior women a priority for the Firm for some time now. In fact we are very proud to say that we are trending well above the industry average with junior to mid-level females at 47.8% e (against “WEF - Women in PE 2015” of 13% ) and senior level at 25.9% (against “Prequin Women in PE 2016” of around 10%). We know we have further to go on this, and it remains core to our recruitment strategy. Regarding your observations on job postings, you are correct and our strategy is deliberate. We are aiming to make sure people coming in have an accurate view of what their role will entail. We have a saying at LeapFrog, “everyone gets coffee”…and sometimes everyone photocopies too! We aren’t a multi-tiered investment house, and we’d rather work towards meritocracy which benefits everyone, not just the senior folks. Regarding the impact of our work, I think our consumers tell it better than I ever could http://www.leapfroginvest.com/videos/leapfrog-10-years-100-million-people-reached/ . Finally, if you’ve worked here, you’ll know our communications team covers PR, support for IR, marketing, internal coms, support for portfolio companies, etc. So it’s a very small team that does big work. Importantly, this is a small team that is big on integrity and simply has never posted a false review on Glassdoor. - Head of People

Pros

Tend to hire smart, nice people but they never stay long... Good opportunities to travel (budget class) and network

Cons

The leadership and any of their 'converted' devotees (i.e. the sycophants) are very much do as I say, not as I do. Despite all the suave marketing and PR (including on glassdoor!), the company doesn't actually care about anything other than money and it isn't actually doing very well. On the last point, when you look at the credentials of most of the senior leadership team it's not surprising, a couple of academics and some other failed private sector investment professionals. The scary part is the behaviour I've seen over quite some time that is bullying, and almost always to women and especially from ethnic minorities. And if they aren't bullying them in some insidious way, then that means the male leadership is usually heavily and inappropriately flirting with female colleagues. It's disgusting.

I’m so sorry to read this disappointing review of your LeapFrog experience. We value diversity in both the composition of our team and views of LeapFrog team members. We expect everyone to uphold behaviours consistent with this. Hiring “smart and nice people” as you highlight doesn’t happen by chance, we do this because we want to build the very best culture with the very best people. Because of this, our goal has always been a culture in which everyone feels comfortable and there is mutual respect. We therefore take claims of bullying or discrimination very seriously. In order for these claims to be properly addressed, I encourage you to share your experiences with your manager, or myself. The Head of Compliance will gratefully meet on any claims where anonymity is sought. Thanks, Liana Gorman Head of People

Obsessed with image & PR and toxic Partners

Pros

They sell a good game - socially responsible investment in emerging markets. You feel good telling this to people, even though you know it's a veneer. Can give you access to interesting people and opportunities elsewhere. Many have used it to build their resume before their MBA.

Cons

The Partners are incompetent, ego-driven men obsessed with getting their tax-free salaries through various tax loop holes (caring for the world's poor? no, not remotely). The Partners are also, on a whole just very lucky to be a LP as they don't understand finance or business (it's shocking the things I've heard come out of their mouths) and wouldn't understand the concept of mentoring if it hit them in the face. In fact, the CEO use to have a 'spy' who would report back to him from the ranks. Things like that and the well-known keeping tabs on you by the Partners creates an atmosphere of distrust but on the surface you have to be super excited, eager and have no issues whatsoever, otherwise you're ungrateful for the amazing opportunity they have given you by letting you join Leapfrog. It's basically part old boys club / part cult, and you are expected to worship at the alter of the CEO and Partners, and if you don't conform, expect them to make your life pretty miserable. It's too bad as they recruit some really great, intelligent, more junior people (although the good ones don't stick around for long). Salaries are also abysmal - they keep claiming that they are the top tier, the McKinsey of PE, but only the Partners get anywhere near top-tier pay... Also, obsessed with image, looking good and spinning a good tale to the media - the amount of coaching we got on PR and what to say outweighed any topics of substance. I would not be surprised if the one positive review here on Glassdoor was a carefully crafted internal effort... Surely even the media have caught on that their portfolio performance is pretty poor (hello, how many exits?) and it's all a lot of feel-good fluff. Overall, a highly toxic work environment driven by the Partners, which outweighs any interesting work or nice (junior) people you may meet along the way.
