Toxic leadership - avoid!

Recommend

Business outlook

Pros

- Fellow engineers, designers, and (most) immediate managers are great people

Cons

Senior leadership is extremely toxic and dishonest - There are lots of opportunities to give feedback, but such feedback will be immediately discarded in favor of short-term profit decisions. - Many people were hired as remote-only, but this was backtracked because the CEO changed his mind on a whim. CEO does not care about forcing employees to be exposed to Covid. - CEO openly praised greed as a virtue during a recent company-wide meeting, bragged about profits and runway, then a week later laid off ~38 people, including high-performing engineers. - Senior management keeps trying "fun" exercises like summer camp-themed team bandana colors, but it just ends up feeling like a poorly masked way to micromanage and hyper-optimize teams. (The modern version of a pizza party party, without the pizza.)

Pros

Work/ Life balance is pretty good and there are a fair number of low-level employees who are awesome personally and professionally.

Cons

- Misalignment of Values and Lack of Transparency: Senior leadership lacks transparency, leading to inconsistent and unexplained shifts in priorities. - Mission Shift, Employee Demographics, and Pay Challenges: M1's mission has transitioned to a "rich get richer" scheme for the ultra-wealthy, causing difficulties for employees outside the target demographic to buy-in due to low pay and sub-par benefits. - DEI Discrepancies and Workplace Inequality: M1's claims of supporting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) don't align with actions. Limited efforts beyond sponsored Happy Hours, with observed instances of racism and sexism in the workplace. - Limited Career Growth and Unfulfilled Promises: Career development is limited, with promotions favoring those willing to kiss up to senior management. Layoffs and restructuring contradict CEO promises and forcing employees into tasks and career paths unrelated to their skills and interests. - Manipulative HR Practices and Inauthentic Reviews: HR actively solicits positive reviews, compromising authenticity. Scheduled meetings coerce employees to write positive reviews, contributing to misleading representations. - Ineffective C-Level Leadership and Lack of Direction: C-level leadership's unclear direction and communication result in a product lacking a cohesive vision. Employees suffer due to leadership's apparent lack of understanding and competence.
