I worked at Mathematica full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The quality assurance principles at Mathematica are fantastic and set the company apart from its peers. You will feel confident in the products you deliver to clients because they are thoroughly vetted—not all companies can say the same. If you have a question or need to work through the best way to do a task, people are very open to talking with you and offering guidance. Mentorship and quality of projects varies greatly...

    Cons

First, let me reiterate the critique from another recent review: “retention has become a major issue - good people are leaving the company at a steady pace due to the lack of any semblance of work-life balance and limited opportunities for growth. Corporate leadership is aware of the issues but they ascribe to the “burn out and replace” management philosophy.” This comment was true to my experience. People in the international,...

    Advice to Management

The management and CEO seem out of touch with the staff. They have yet to roll out many programs that were in the works 3 years ago. Focus on burn out and appropriate utilization rates for staff. Hire more people or bid on fewer projects. People can't produce high quality work with no time to do it. Also, pay your people what they deserve!

I worked at Mathematica full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Interesting colleagues - but you will never have time to speak with them because everyone is stretched so thin. Breadth of projects and content areas - although you have very little control over your staffing portfolio. Benefits are average for the regional offices - but you will never have the opportunity to take PTO. Flexibility to work remotely - which is needed because morale is so low that no one shows up at the...

    Cons

Mathematica used to be a stalwart in public policy research and evaluation. Unfortunately, it has devolved into utter chaos with an organizational identity crisis. Mathematica wants to become a consulting firm but it does not offer staff any of the accompanying supports such as professional development opportunities, appropriate compensation, or a bonus structure. They are bidding on everything under the sun, even when...

I worked at Mathematica full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Free bagels on fridays and ability to create your own schedule.

    Cons

No room for growth within your job or salary.

    Advice to Management

Pay more and have a handful of employees because people quit a lot here due to the fact there is no salary advancement or growth opportunities for people who enjoy what they do. They are taking advantage of the job market and college graduates paying 10.00 an hour for work that seems more than that.

I worked at Mathematica full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Very smart and friendly colleagues; really high standard of work quality; interesting projects (most of the time); convenient office location with access to public transit; acceptable salary for the city I worked in; growth potential for certain roles is certainly possible; employee-owned; solid infrastructure for accounting/IT/administration/formatting experts that made it easy to just focus on the research in a research...

    Cons

Cons: Absurdly long and unnecessarily bureaucratic hiring process (literally months long and with well over a dozen people - at some point there were diminishing returns); salaries are not adjusted based on office location, leading to laughable salaries in high-COL cities that are well below competitors; combined PTO bank, which discourages people from staying home when they're sick because they don't want to lose vacation...

I have been working at Mathematica part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Flexible schedule. You complete a calendar on the 20th of the month indicating the hours you want to work the following month. Great co-workers.

    Cons

Work is project based so you may not always have an assignment.
