I have been working at Metropolitan Police Service full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Huge variety. Some great people who want to do the best job possible

    Cons

Constant focus on unnecessary performance figures and targets rather than just doing the job. Too much reporting at lower management level and too many staff shortages.

I worked at Metropolitan Police Service full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Exciting, never dull, interesting and rewarding. Providing a vital public service.

    Cons

Tough/exhausting shift pattern on response, highly competitive, you are just a number. Newbies not treated too well. Face must fit. Culture of disrespect/disdain towards probationers by (some) experienced officers and superior ranks. Monitoring/supervision/criticism of PC's by line managers overbearing and unfair at times - some sergeants are great and supportive but unfortunately not all. Be prepared: body worn footage is watched and monitored so you are effectively spied on most of the time at work. Huge amount of bureaucracy and sitting at computers. Work can eat into own time. Annual leave problematic on response. You need to be thick skinned, tough and fit to cope with this job.

I have been working at Metropolitan Police Service full-time

    Pros

Opportunities to gain skills and expertise that are difficult to develop anywhere else. Reasonable pay. Occasional job satisfaction

    Cons

Poor management. Overwhelmingly bureaucratic. Shift work wreaks havoc on your life outside of work. No natural career development

I have been working at Metropolitan Police Service full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Overtime is paid unlike most corporate environments - Some managers are exceptional

    Cons

    - Old and inefficient computers, software and procedures - Allocation of funds is a mess. Some teams milk overtime daily, whilst neighbourhood police do not even get a vehicle in some places, meaning a huge amount of police time is wasted trying to get to places. - Little feedback and development reviews. As long as you perform above the absolute minimum (which is alarmingly low), nobody would bat an eyelid. Nothing to push you to perform better - Forced to undertake non-police tasks even after identifying that it's a non-police issue - Underutilisation of officers' skills. There is no interest in backgrounds and where this might help the organisation. As long as the most pressing work is done, management are happy. - No motivation to improve efficiency or productivity whatsoever - No challenging side tasks to motivate and stimulate staff. It's the same boring day in day out work that becomes a drag REALLY fast. If you are half-smart, avoid this organisation all together as you will have a much better time in the county forces or in the private sector.
