Small Nonprofit Doing Big Things

Pros

I worked full-time with a small but dedicated team of friendly individuals that were lovely to work with, who I felt had my back and were looking out for me. I also got the sense that my time was respected - schedules could be flexible but reasonable, occasional remote days were acceptable, and most people stuck to a 9-5 schedule. Upper-level management and the CEO value input from their teams and there is very minimal sense of hierarchy in day-to-day operations. The staff is currently very homogenous, but they had some productive conversations surrounding the BLM movement - though the effects of that remain to be seen.

Cons

Typical of a small nonprofit, Move For Hunger is trying to do a lot of things with few people and spend the least amount of money doing it. That means salaries are low and some positions are only part-time - most people working at the org either have a partner’s second income, or are young and still living with their parents. They thankfully do offer healthcare, dental/vision, and a 401k, but when I got an offer for better pay, there was no question that I had to accept it. Internships are also currently unpaid, though staff have pushed for stipends for interns. Also note that currently, this is more of a transportation and logistics organization, which doesn’t deal very directly with food banks or the people that the food actually benefits. If you’re looking to hear those stories and be in more of a hunger relief space, you won’t really find that here. Sometimes it's a struggle to appeal to donors and supporters without these personal stories.

While sometimes there's long hours, they try to make up for it with added PTO.
