Pros

Great coworkers with a passion for what they do.

Cons

Mediocre benefits, only to get worse. No bonuses. Forcing people to work 4 days a week on-site come 12/1 with no actual data to back up their reasoning. Terrible, below market pay. Leadership makes incredible amounts of money while the rest of the company is nickel and dimed, many people there upwards of 5-10 years barely make above minimum wage. The CEO doesn’t understand (or care to) what it’s like to be a normal, working person in MA with cost of living, commuting, child care expenses, etc. Leadership touts diversity, we need to increase diversity, when taking away any benefit and making it more difficult for most diverse people to want or be able to work there. Forget about being a working parent here.

Pros

Great in-the-field experience, especially for a foot-in-the-door entry level job in sports journalism. A lot of really great people work on the technical/engineering/studio side, and you get a decent amount of editorial freedom.

Cons

The culture is extremely problematic. There is no diversity, with the excuse of "covering male dominated sports like MLB and NHL." There is very little room for career advancement. They'll use you, so you should use them: use all the opportunities given, suck it up to an extent as the culture is pretty toxic, then leave after a few years to the next step in your career. Also, the compensation is very low (although expected in this industry).

Pros

People you work with everyday are brilliant, driven and hard working

Cons

Middle and upper management, for the most part, are so disconnected from the day-to-day of the company that they have no idea what's going on and where the company needs to improve. Mission of NESN's upper management is to just become a "yes person", dump the work on the middle manager who then dumps the work on their team and then the upper management collects a bonus because they're thought of doing a good job. The company laid off 20% of it's workforce after I left earlier in the year and the ask for everyone is still to do more and more. Zero accountability for the managers at the company. As long as they say yes to their boss their job is safe but they don't actually do anything or help find solutions to issues. Awful work/life balance. Make you come into the office four days a week for no reason at all other than to have you in meetings all day. Once you become a manager all it means is you are in meetings 24/7 and never actually getting work done. Then just dump work on your employees. For a media company NESN has always been 5 years behind. Even changes made when it seemed like they were getting more modern missed the mark completely. It's one person's vision for a demographic they have no idea about. Micromanagement which leads to a crippling anxiety to freely think Compensation is insanely low - for the amount of responsibilities you have and to live in the Greater Boston area
