      NIAB EMR - Nice people, interesting work, senior management needs improvement

      Pros

      Friendly working atmosphere within the science teams with a spirit of helping colleagues. Lots of up and coming younger PIs coming through and being given responsibility for proposal writing and starting to make an impact. Recent acquisition by NIAB and staff restructuring has gone as smoothly as can be expected and has generally been a positive experience.

      Cons

      NIAB EMR heads of department are scientists first, bureaucrats second and people managers last. Younger PIs not always given resources needed and sometimes given menial tasks due to shortage of technical staff. Recent acquisition by NIAB and staff restructuring has created job insecurity for some.

      Pros

      Some very nice people to work with Directorate were friendly and made an effort to engage with everybody Active staff union

      Cons

      Some very oppressive and dispiriting management in the section that I worked in Some very old fashioned and hierarchical thinking exists in parts Limited to non-existent career development for some roles

      Flexible working, friendly working environment at local levels

      Cons

      It used to be a nice place to work but employer doesn't appreciate the good will of staff and all the extra effort they make. For many years the annual pay award was below inflation. There is luck of transparency at the executive level and some poor decisions have been made the past few years. There is large staff turnover as salaries are not competitive. Staff moral is very low at the moment. Awful work life balance, which the executive board does not appreciate.
