Pros

- Work is purposeful compared to previous work in silicon valley / adtech – you can see how the software we build affects real people and vulnerable populations - Smart, kind colleagues to learn from - Strong leadership that has navigated COVID well and set a clear vision - A variety of projects to be on gives a chance to learn and grow new skills - Culture is empathetic

Cons

- Working with government can be frustrating, it can take time to create buy in for ideas and approaches - Compensation isn't a con, but is below silicon valley

Pros

The company offers a competitive salary and strong benefits package, Flexible work arrangements, including remote and hybrid options, along with occasional travel opportunities that add variety to the role. Colleagues are intelligent, thoughtful, and genuinely committed to making a difference. There is a clear, shared sense of purpose around supporting individuals who rely on government assistance programs, particularly within the public health space, which lends the work a strong mission-driven foundation.

Cons

The organization struggles with fundamental operational and leadership challenges. Direct management was inconsistent and lacked the clarity, guidance, and accountability expected at this level, making it difficult to succeed and grow in the role. More broadly, there is a noticeable absence of accountability across teams, often resulting in confusion about ownership and responsibilities. Communication practices are another significant issue. An overreliance on Slack created a highly fragmented and overstimulating work environment, where critical work was buried in constant notifications and excessive back-and-forth. This was compounded by an overabundance of company-wide huddles, many of which disrupted day-to-day productivity without delivering clear value. The organization often felt structurally undefined. Roles and responsibilities weren't always clearly communicated, leaving employees frequently unclear on who has been hired or what their function is. There were several moments where I would attempt to reach out to someone via email or Slack just to find out that their access is activated and they no longer work for the company. No announcement, nothing, just awkard moments of realizing that a coworker no longer works at the company. High turnover further destabilized team cohesion. Leadership also appears to lack strategic clarity at times, particularly when it comes to differences of opinions, and establishing clear event goals and objectives, leading to inefficiencies and last-minute pivots. Cross-team collaboration, while encouraged, often resulted in misalignment and duplicated efforts rather than streamlined outcomes. Some assigned tasks felt redundant and lacked meaningful opportunities for growth or skill development. Additionally, it was difficult to schedule time with colleagues, which slowed progress and created bottlenecks on critical tasks and projects. Onboarding and role clarity are particularly weak points—receiving a formal job description more than eight months into the role reflects a broader pattern of disorganization. Overall, the company operates in a reactive mode, often “building" the plane while flying it,” which contributes to an unsustainable and at times chaotic work environment.

Pros

- Kind colleagues, sometimes to a fault - Company and its leaders are well connected in the civic tech space, you'll learn a lot and be inspired by the potential opportunities in the space - Good work-life balance if you're on the right project

Cons

There's so much talk about the mission and values like diversity throughout the interview process and when you first join the company, but once you actually start work, you'll quickly realize that it's all talk and no action. Most of the executive team is new to their position (for example, never been C-level or VP before) and it shows. In the past year, significant company decisions have been made and then reversed, with no explanation. Leadership is not steering the company in a sustainable direction and is not transparent in decision-making which has eroded trust throughout the organization. There is limited career development available due to the nature of government contracting and inexperienced managers who don't know how to help with your career or have no influence to change your compensation/level A lot of people have expressed burnout vocally, but no action is ever taken. Some projects are widely known as toxic and nobody wants to work on them because the company leadership is not addressing the issues and just sweeping them under the rug. All the good talent is leaving or is on their way out. There is no transparency into why people are leaving even though they do exit interviews and nothing has changed.

Pros

Nava is a unique family, filled with empathetic folks that are driven to impact the lives of many. It’s a place where I feel welcomed to come to work as my true self, share ideas and be authentic. Regardless of whether or not my ideas are in line with the status quo I know, I’ll be listened to. People really matter- I feel valued as a human before an employee. - Culture - Benefits - Flexibility (flexible workday schedules for most job roles) - Tons of autonomy - Growth - Great Perks - Very transparent from the top down - Strong dynamic leadership - Intelligent and caring colleagues - The fairest and well thought out interview process I’ve found to date - Sharing knowledge - A shared sense of ownership - An increasingly diverse workplace - Really smart people There are a ton of great people here who are passionate about what they do, which fills me with energy.

Cons

hmmmm it's not a large company, if you're looking for a place to hideout and not do much this isn't it.

Pros

your colleagues are just about the only thing that’ll make it survivable, but the turnover rate is so high you really shouldn’t plan on them sticking around to keep you sane and grounded. giving this 2 stars instead of 1 solely bc the people who work there are great, which makes it even worse that the company is so bad to work for.

Cons

Weak leadership with a lack of emotional intelligence; excessively high turnover, including in management; layoffs with no warning that the financial situation was so dire; PeopleOps ability to attract talent outpaces leadership’s ability to retain it (don’t get sucked into the hype, it’s all smoke and mirrors); poor client management; hasty decision-making; toxic positivity; inequitable division of workload/share of responsibilities; CEO is a phony; could go on, but the best thing you can take away from this is \\ do not apply. // you can make more money somewhere else w/o having to go through the worst professional experience of your life. I chose to post this now instead of 2020 when I left bc the staff has unionized and there’s good reason for that. run the other way.
