Pros

Friendly co-workers, family-oriented, great supervisor, flexible hours

Cons

Low wages/salary. Relies on mission of company to keep employees happy, versus tangible benefits Position was misclassified as non-exempt Lack of opportunity. It took 4 years to get a promotion that amounted to a 2% pay increase No separate sick leave, it's included in earned leave I left employer on excellent terms, but HR will not allow my supervisor to be a reference for me.

Pros

In a word, the people. Musicians, printers, artists, writers, accountants, journalists, programmers, you name it, all working together in a unique environment. Most are there because they want to contribute something to the Church or work in nonprofits. Personal growth is valued, and there's a concerted effort by General Management to embrace change and include staff whenever possible. A plus? The building itself sits right next to Normandale Park, is near many great restaurants, and is centrally located to many parts of the metro area.

Cons

The culture can be intimidating. Information is passed on on a "need to know" basis which can give the appearance of secrecy. Trust is hard to earn and not easily given between departments or management and staff (both directions). Opportunities for professional growth have been hard to come by in recent years.

I would not make a change to OCP.

Pros

The best thing about OCP is the people. Unfortunately in this last round of layoffs, a lot of the amazing people were let go.

Cons

Politics, lack of trust between departments, lack of leadership, toxic work environment, massive lack of communication - top down. It’s unfortunate that the people who claim to be the “leadership team” lack vision, strength and conviction. I came to OCP because of my Catholic faith. As a Catholic publisher, it’s shocking that it is also the MOST toxic work environment I’ve ever been in, and that’s saying a lot. I would not make a switch to OCP. Most likely, you will take a huge paycut (as I did), thinking that the Catholic environment will make it worthwhile. It doesn’t. You end up barely scraping by, working more hours than you should, and working for people who don’t see your value, who would let you go in a heartbeat.
