Pros

OARnet allows for exposure to network engineering and many different technologies. Great hands-on experience for entry-level work and learning about multiple protocols and technologies. Work / life balance is great; benefits are phenomenal with OSU / state perks. Management is understanding and accommodating regarding time off / leave / work expectations, as well as paid for Juniper training available to all NOC staff

Cons

Lots of office politicking. Some employees can get away with doing next to no work with no repercussions and sometimes are even awarded for it. Grievances are not properly addresses so a lingering air of hostility can exist at times. Procedures for issues are often not clearly defined, leading to confusion among shifts on how to handle niche / unusual issues. Shifts are unevenly staffed, leading to some team members being over-worked while others do not work / freeload whilst also being overstaffed. Moving up within OARnet is a slow process, and would likely be quicker in non-state employment.

Pros

State benefits as well as University perks are wonderful. The university will match retirement up to 14%.

Cons

The CTO has been interim for +3 years with no replacement coming soon. The Director of OARnet is an extremely good engineer, but lacks proper management and direction -From this the entire networking team suffers from bad decisions and permanent band aids to ongoing problems. There is also a high level of toxic culture here, where toxic employees are never confronted about their behavior, only moved from shifts. There is a high level of arrogance around this office. If learning networking, one needs to take a large block of salt with supposed explanations/advice. Sadly with this being a state job, everyone is making about 15-20% less than private. About 80% of the staff only stay due to retirement, with this overall motivation is somewhat stagnant.
