A real start up - the one that you're looking for

Pros

Working at Pattern is kind of like joining that start up that you've always been looking for (if you're into the whole start up culture and work environment). I've worked at a lot, as have most of the people in the company. There's a real advantage to that - from respecting peoples space and talents to truly valuing the contribution of each player. The team is comprised of some of the smartest engineers I've ever met. The services they offer are genuinely impressive to the clients we work with and for once (in terms of a start ups products / services) everything just seems to work. They've also got some of the most advanced technology coming out with a very promising early results. The company is probably going places. Culture is great - you do what you need to get done and no one bothers you. Company meetings are awesome and occasionally we all go out to dinner to celebrate recent success.

Cons

Theres been another review that has touched on this, but its tough to put it under a con - I certainly don't think it is, but to many it maybe so I'll put it under here. Some people don't operate well with the complete autonomy you have here. You have to be self motivated and reliant or you wont succeed. Theres pressure to succeed as everyone relies on each other. Don't have enough sales for one contracts are up? It's possible an engineer is being let go. Like, next week. Its also totally possible for an engineer to tank a contract (I haven't seen it) but, again its possible, and it could have massive impacts on other individuals. It's honestly the trade off of actually having a meaningful contribution to a company.

Pros

You get to work in a positive environment where everyone is friendly, helpful, and fun. The company deals with a variety of clients, and there are a lot of opportunities to collaborate and receive feedback from peers, who are professional, smart, and passionate in what they do. Senior management is open to your ideas and upward momentum in developing your career is encouraged. Flexible work hours. Work is never stale since each of us work with new clients as we complete numerous projects. As long as client projects have been completed, there are unlimited PTO days, which is very rare in contract companies. Wonderful product. PatternSpace is an amazing product well ahead of the competition and constantly improving. You get to work on the product with a hard-working and intelligent team.

Cons

Many expectations and work to finish (which is also a good thing). Since most of the employees are on-site with clients, it's hard to interact with your coworkers in person. We use Slack, ScreenHero, Google Hangout, and etc. to communicate, but there isn't an actual office space yet.

Pros

Working at Pattern has been a very positive experience. It is the ideal startup in terms of culture, work environment, and leadership. Everyone is extremely supportive, helpful, fun, and intelligent. You are provided with the proper, most latest, equipment you need to do your job. You get to work with some of the most talented engineers and are constantly challenged. With changing projects between different clients, the work is never boring, and you’re always learning, something I find to be highly valuable. Everyone is responsible for a project or some part of a project. The ability to own these parts is very fulfilling and while work is extremely flexible, you are trusted to get it done without being bothered. This responsibility really fosters a feeling of the need to succeed among everyone. Pattern delivers high quality work. Clients are always very impressed with the output of projects and the services they are provided. They are doing big things and coming out with some very innovative technology.

Cons

I haven’t had a remotely negative experience here. I guess the only thing, which is what everyone else has touched on, is having pretty much complete autonomy over your work schedule (when you’re not onsite for a client), might not be for everyone. (I don’t think this is a bad thing though)
