It has been extremely different working for a government entity compared to my many years in private industry.

Pros

It's nice to have a steady, full time job. It is almost impossible to get fired from the county.

Cons

It is almost impossible to get a raise or promotion (the perception is that you have to wait for someone to die or retire) and unless you are being hired for one of the upper level classifications you have zero negotiating power for starting salary. It is almost impossible to get fired from the county, regardless of how incompetent you are. (The deadwood just gets shuffled to a position where they can't interfere with the actual work of the department.)

At the worker bee level everyone is pretty nice and mostly motivated to do good work.

Cons

There is a preference toward Latino workers. Management at the upper levels are making a push to hire more Latinos into the higher positions. This makes it difficult for other races

Competitive wages/salaries for IT employees.

Cons

Orwellian health insurance policies penalize employees deemed to be living "unhealthy lifestyles" (non-participation in "healthy lifestyle discount" programs automatically deems you "unhealthy" and increases your premiums). Many unqualified people in senior or management roles. Actual skill or merit does not seem to factor into success.
