A growing company, and a brand with a big responsibility to its fans

Pros

No company is perfect, but what really matters is how hard they try and what they inspire to. The culture at Pottermore has changed hugely for the better in the time that I have worked there, and I have no doubt will continue to do so. Harry Potter is a phenomenon for which an incredible number of people have tremendous devotion and affection, so working at Pottermore provides the opportunity to work on a brand that truly matters to people. That can have its downsides - with so many fans, you can never please everyone - but there is a growing culture of openness to new ideas and feedback that gives the opportunity to put your thoughts forward. As a close knit company, it's a chance to work without a steep hierarchy, and in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. There are all the perks you would expect from a decent company - free coffee and toast, drinks for your birthday, regular social events and Christmas and Summer parties, but for me the real appeal was the chance to work on a brand I really care about.

Cons

With a responsibility to one of the most dedicated fan communities in the world, it can be fraught and challenging, and occasionally seem daunting, but that's part of what also makes it a strong challenge. It's a small company, so if you want to be spoonfed, or to avoid accountability it's not the place for you. The team has grown rapidly in the past year, and a lot of new faces can sometimes mean a bit of a queue for the kettle and the toaster!

Pros

Free coffee, great office/location, good laughs at the managements expense, if you want to learn how badly a place is run then this is the location, work/life balance is great as there isn't much to do.....the odd free doughnut Colleagues were the best thing there, that trench warfare mentality got us through the day.

Cons

I had no clue as to what the company focus was, no career ladder or clear objective setting, managers that can't manage people, phone calls on the toilet, not AGILE even though they hark on about it, high staff turnover - its a contractors heaven, its a culture of secrets and brain farts. I'd say av life expectancy is around one year, core product is out of date and no one at a snr level knows what to do with it, amazingly poor staff get togetherness unless you liked a book club discussing the latest womens hour book of the month. Despite being a 'Magical' brand it left me with a feeling of being on blackpool pier watching a washed up great suprendo on a wet rainy day.
