Pros

Awesome Office Passionate People Rewarding Work Relaxed Vacation Policy (not that you'll use it)

Cons

Constantly laying off or firing people, sometimes for as little as posting on Facebook they had a bad day at work. They're running out of cash and so they are looking for reason to fire or lay off people, because they can't afford all the people they've hired on. On top of that, they expect 100% of your time. Most people work 60-70 hours a week and then the CEO tells them they haven't worked hard enough, and that they need to sleep in the office and work over night on the weekends. He actually got the whole company together to show them videos of people sleeping in the office and working overnight then said "THIS is Quirky's culture and I expect it from all of you". Lastly, leadership is not all on the same page when it comes to the strategy, so everyone has different agendas and opinions. It's a sinking ship and everyone knows it. They constantly change direction (I've gone through 6 different org charts in less than 2 years), so it's a mess. Don't buy into the smoke and mirrors; this place is a loser and is bound to be the next Fab. Dead in 2016.

Eye-opening. Not always in a good way.

Pros

Quirky's growth was occurring rapidly when I was there, and it continues to do so now. They are on the rise, especially now that they're partnering with GE. Ben and the C-level employees are masters of hype, so Quirky has a pretty awesome reputation in NYC. There's a lot of opportunity to do work outside of your daily duties in order to add some extra tidbits to your resume. I started at entry-level and in a short amount of time I was able to add a lot of skills to my repertoire and ultimately become a more well-rounded professional. The office is gorgeous. Beer fridge is always fully stocked.

Cons

Ben Kaufman is not an easy person to work for. When he's not acting like an insolent child and offending anyone in his path, he is extremely demanding—sometimes unrealistically so. He was not open to much logic, criticism, or input regarding the way he ran things. Often he would reject logical ideas without hearing them out. It seemed like he took joy out of firing people. Sometimes he and the other C-levels would publicly make fun of people they've fired and other former employees. It felt like they were a clique of bullies on the playground. Pretty unprofessional. Also, the entire start-up philosophy is taken to the extreme at Quirky. Projects are started on a whim (because Ben has a last minute idea) and then abandoned just as quickly. Everything seems to happen at the last possible minute. Nobody seemed to care about the products we were making—just the hype they produced. And forget about the community. Ben admitted on several occasions that "the community doesn't matter." It was really a bummer that most people consider Ben a boy genius, when in reality you never saw much of that at the office.

Great people, horrible management

Pros

I love working with all my co-workers at Quirky. They are amazingly intelligent and thoughtful individuals who love collaborating on various projects. The network I have built while working at Quirky will take me much further in my career than anything else.

Cons

HORRIBLE management and CEO. This company will be driven to the ground in no time. I've seen so many people I started with get fired after 3 to 6 months due to non-performance related issues. Many individuals left great careers at other firms to join Quirky and then were let go in less than a year. Also, there is an utter lack of work/life balance. The expectation is that Quirky becomes your life and you will work 10-12 hour days at least. If you are talented, don't come here and don't believe the hype.
