I worked at RAND full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great topics to work on, fantastic and motivated colleagues, intellectual stimulation and challenges, constant learning and growth opportunities. vibrant culture in my office. Very strong public good mission and feeling that your work makes a difference.

    Cons

Long hours because of gripping topics and always juggling priorities on different projects. You make your own path and have to find your own opportunities, which can be daunting for some and exhilarating for others.

I have been working at RAND full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Stimulating and interesting projects, high calibre work colleagues who care about the high impact work they are doing

    Cons

There are some teething problem with management structures that may or may not get better with time. No time to enjoy the stimulation of interesting project work as you have to constantly move onto other tasks

I worked at RAND full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Very friendly atmosphere, smart and caring colleagues, exciting and diverse projects across different teams. There is a steep learning curve after you start.

    Cons

There is a disconnect between the amount of money you will bring to the company and how much you actually get, and also between your contribution to the team or the company and your career development.

    Advice to Management

People are the first and only asset that the organisation has - keeping low turnover rates should be the main priority.

I have been working at RAND full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

some good people trying to do good things but difficult to do under current administration.

    Cons

socially conservative, family oriented, poor infrastructure, long term RANDites tend to be stuck in some 1970s white boy ivory tower somewhere, which is irritating. They treat AAs as if we are work wives. Little or no chances for advancement unless its in finance which is a cluster at RAND, like so many other aspects of their operations.

    Advice to Management

Not going to be able to change the culture by just bringing in diverse temp to perm support staff. Until you have some people of color at the top, RAND won't be a diverse organization
