Pros

Good work life balance. Reduced cost health insurance is offered but you must and spouse must submit to health screening. 15 days PTO. If you are entry level, then there is room for promotion if you are in 20s.

Cons

When budget restrictions are implemented, senior staff are let go and replaced by junior cheaper staff. A good annual review is not an indication that you will be retained. Very political and unpleasant for long term prospects. Older staff working customer service are not afforded the same career path as 20 somethings.Health insurance - drug coverage is very poor. High school-like click is hard to avoid.

Pros

Overall Railinc is worth a try but be prepared to leave if it doesn't work out. Railinc could be wonderful or a terrible place for you depending on your role, the project you work on or your manager. Because Railinc shifts projects and personnel from year to year your experience might vary over time. Some people happily spend decades at Railinc while others (many) only make it a few months before running for the door. On the plus side most of the people who work at Railinc are very nice, the Railroad industry is fascinating, and your work could make a big difference in the real world. You might also get to work on some interesting new technologies from time to time. The building and location are nice with greenways right out the back door and a great exercise facility. Railinc's senior leadership team is actively working to remove some built-in inefficiencies within the company.

Cons

Railinc does have higher than average attrition rate for the IT industry so people who stay long are definitely in the minority. It is telling that their highest-ranked employees rarely stay long. Railinc has have some very old, poorly designed but critical systems. You should expect to be called upon fairly often to work nights and weekends and holidays and vacations dealing with problems, regardless of your role. Most of their systems are expected to run with nearly zero downtime. The company runs very lean so any issues with production systems result in all hands on deck until it is resolved. Incidents that result in blown SLAs result in deductions from the company bonus across the entire company. The company motto is "Work with a Purpose", which means you are in the wrong place if you are not willing to sacrifice on a regular basis for the greater good of the company. This might be a pro if you thrive on a sense of shared mission and enjoy overcoming obstacles. The senior leadership team tends to be a bit insular, lacks empathy, and have demonstrated an inability or unwillingness to understand the underlying causes of turnover. They have given up on trying to retain employees and have shifted their attention to making it easier to plug in new-hires who will most-likely leave within a year. In other words if you aren't happy at Railinc it is up to you to find a way to be happy or leave, which at least puts your future in your own hands.

Smart coworkers; poor leadership.

Pros

Some very talented professionals fill this place. The work content and subject matter is challenging and unique. Benefits are good (use to be great).

Cons

Gross lack of true leadership and effective decision making. Inappropriate use of resources, complete mis-representation of activity, expenditures and resources being used on non-mission critical "strategic initiatives". No open line of communications to enable reporting without retaliation.

Railinc Response

Thanks for your review and for your kind words about the people working at Railinc. I am concerned however, about your other comments. It’s not clear exactly what you are referring to, but you should know that every Railinc employee has multiple channels for expressing their concerns about any aspect of the company - regardless of whether it’s a strategic initiative, budgeting matter, personnel issue or other concern. If you do not feel comfortable speaking with your manager, then the HR department, any company director or senior executive (including the CEO) is happy and willing to speak with you, even on a confidential basis if desired. If there is a major concern, then Railinc’s internal audit department has a direct line to the Railinc Board of Directors. That said, while reasonable people may not always agree on process or approach, it is important to note that Railinc is a well-run and highly effective organization, staffed by competent and trained professionals at every level. The leadership team manages the business with complete financial transparency to the Railinc Board. This includes review and approvals for industry technology projects and strategic business initiatives; detailed budget approval processes and rigorous reviews of yearly financial performance; and detailed audits of every project and system in the company. If you want or need more information to fully understand any initiative in the company, including the financials; or if you just want to vent about your observations, then I encourage you to seek out other leaders in the company who are more than willing to work with you on either front. Thanks again for taking time to write. Be assured your message has been shared with the Railinc executive team.
