Pros

You get basic technical support experience that looks good on your resume. Pay is decent and good amount of paid holidays.

Cons

Nepotism and as a result, low morale due to experienced technicians having to train family & friends of upper management who have no technical experience or education. They don't even bother to learn or retain the knowledge because in 6 months they'll get promoted to a leadership role. Management has zero knowledge or experience in IT and have no understanding of how to run a team. Technicians are referred to as "resources" and treat you as such.

Pros

This has been a great role while raising children. The county has a 9/80 schedule, holidays off, discounts at some childcare facilities. Staff are friendly. Leadership is supportive and kind.

Cons

As is typical in an internal services department (the IT Department). There are times when customer departments will demand bad decisions that negatively impact service to the public. However, this is a pain point shared by every government IT department I'm aware of. The ability of the County government to respond to recent rapid inflation is insufficient (2023). It feels like taking a pay cut to keep working here.
