      Gained lots of experience in software engineering in space research

      Pros

      Very focused on the applied science of climate and space research. For a software engineer, this means you get to work in multi-disciplinary teams. A typical project team consists of scientists, electronics engineers, firmware engineers, mechanical engineers, etc. Lots of vacation days, and very good pension.

      Cons

      Salaries are 5 to 10 percent below market rate, but with a guaranteed bonus at the end of the year. The loyal work force also means that you often work with the same people, new hires are rather rare. Promotions are even more rare, due to the limited spots already taken by people who stay with the company 15-30 years.

      Nice place for your first postdoc, not for long-term career

      Pros

      - Interesting scientific projects to work on. - Informal environment, relaxed working atmosphere. - Senior scientists are competent and approachable. You can learn a lot from them. - The Institute has a good international reputation. - Good relationship with colleagues.

      Cons

      - Long-term career possibilities are strongly dependent on the department you work at and on the project you are hired for. - Little to no care for your personal development. There is budget available, but don't expect anyone to tell you what the possibilities are or to encourage you to acquire new skills or get training in specific areas. - No clear goals are set to define what is expected, e.g., for you to get a promotion. - If you work on purely scientific projects, you are just cheap labour. After your temporary contract reaches its maximum length, you'll be shown the door no matter what.
