Pros

Some of the people are cool, I enjoyed my first year there

Cons

bad pay, not appreciated, they constantly hire unskilled people that just see it as a job making it difficult for others to do their work. Picking up after other people. As a company they want maximum for for minimum pay. No incentives for doing well. No bonuses, no extra pay or time and a half on bank holidays. They invest all their money in the wrong things. Staff morale in general is low. I am friends with people from other stores and they're all exactly the same.

Pros

Hardly any office bitchiness. Colleagues I worked with made me forget the struggle. We all kept one another positive when the pressure was on. Free hot drinks.

Cons

Mainly concerning management: - nasty as you can get - work by intimidation - People are in fear of them marching over and being displeased with their work - verbally bashing you in front of others - No people-skills, cannot even crack a smile - You will not get praise or encouragement - actions and behaviour depend on mood. Which by the way stinks atleast every other day - WIP meetings are incredible daunting and uncomfortable - Constant micro-managing - Draining - direct Bullying - direct line manager left due to bullying and then I got lucky (!) - threats when work isn't prioritised or "up to scratch" - In no way supportive - Copying everyone in to emails that do not need their involvement (yep - one of those) - Ruling by intimidation - Do not realise the volume of work everyone has to manage - Cannot take No for an answer -Treat those under them like children. Literally having a go at them over the phone or in a meeting. These departments are embarrassingly run. Only person doing my job for over a year and they thought to bring no-one else in; very few resources. People have come and gone for my role. No-one has stayed more than a year. Do not appreciate or reward hard graft. It had a massive detrimental effect on my life. Wish I left sooner. Truly regret it. Couldn't even enjoy the months leading up to my wedding. Had one person leave after 5 days, 5 days !! I have nothing to lose by writing this honest review.

Pros

Great place to "cut your teeth" as a starting role. Varied and intense workload providing multi-channel experience. Office Products is still quite a friendly industry so not as aggressive as some. In my time there there were a number of people who had been with the organization a long time and were happy to help you learn and advance, However, with a number of consolidations, re-locations and masses of redundancies I think the majority of these people have now moved on.

Cons

Poor work/life balance with a heavy workload. Much of this was driven by a resistance to change and masses of bureaucracy that one had to go through to get anything implemented. Also it felt like every decision had to be checked and ratified by commission and there was little scope for creativity. This meant most simple tasks took much longer than they should/could. Also it meant that we were unable to react quickly to changing micro and macro circumstances. There was also a lack of ambition to discuss and embrace new ideas. Staples also paid poorly for the area/industry, especially when you consider their location, and there appeared to be a ceiling to internal promotion making it difficult to advance your career beyond a certain level or move horizontally to different departments.
