I have been working at Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

In general a good company to work for , the benefits are very good. It is a relatively small bank in the city

    Cons

Obviously being a Japanese bank a lot is expected of you. You are expected to work hard and put in the extra hours when required. It can be difficult to get promoted unless you really raise your profile

"Poor Management and lack of strategy"

    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

High amount of responsibilities given at early stage
Departments are well integrated with each other
Some good colleagues with good skill level

    Cons

No career prospects if you are not japanese
Outdated technology and unwillingness to invest
Almost all of management are expats that do not speak proper English, have no relevant skills and no strategy at all
Travel policy is awful (economy class even for travel to NY and Dubai, poor hotels and a budget of 44 USD per day)
Very high into hierarchy and not allowed to challenge management

    Advice to Management

Modernise your management and balance expats versus non-expats. Empower your staff and treat them better. The company culture reminds of the 70s - it's like watching episodes of Mad Men

    Pros

    - amazing company benefits (pension is the best i've seen)
    - stable company with a low turnover
    - great management team

    Cons

    - dated technology and processes. If you want to use the latest tech then it will be difficult to do that here
    - isolated as a technologist

I have been working at Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Hours are very reasonable and environment is not as high paced as investment banks. You can find yourself staying there for a very long time.

    Cons

Senior management are all expats come over for two year period, bank doesn't have any long-term strategies in place because of it.

    Advice to Management

Make senior management stay for at least 5 years so they make more of an investment into London office.

    Pros

Very good life balance and good pay

    Cons

Excessive bureaucracy and any appetite, motivation and drive for change is soon diminished and can be extremely demoralizing

    Advice to Management

Consider moving those who do not want change aside so the organisation can evolve and mature
