Ever worked in a cult ?

Pros

Most people have been there over 20 years. They never learned how to communicate with other humans so everything is done via email. There is an evangelical faction that loves to beat your head in with their faith during mandated lunch outings and give you quizzical looks if you attempt anything resembling adult conversation. The benefits are positive

Cons

The technology is so old it makes "Wargames" look current by comparison. The level of bloat in the IT department is a concession to this. There is a wicked witch there that runs roughshod over others in meetings in order to spray her territory and let people know how strong she is. It's a yellowed, depressing cube farm adjacent to a warehouse manned by Kane County Work Release Inmates and illegals. The breakroom is a throw back to the 1970s with its dog eared framed comics, dusty fake plants and ancient microwave. The only decent department in the whole outfit is customer service. One sales guy damn near dropped dead and everyone just stared. It's a cult.

Pros

If you love to wear suits, you'll enjoy this part of working here. The class of the office, doesn't quite match, but nothing less than bank attire is acceptable. The company is sadly really out of touch with the times.

Cons

I wish I knew where to start here. I had one of my employees fired from under me with almost no wrongdoing, despite my wanting to keep her on my first week with the company. I then wasn't allowed to backfill her position. I've never encountered a company as cliquey as this one, I felt like I was in high school again. The amount of secrets that were kept for no apparent reason other than to screw other employees, was astounding. I regularly had promises broken by the owner of the company. I really wanted to like working here, but it's just a dysfunctional company.

Pros

Suncast continues to do well in a down economy and industry. Medical benefits are excellent. Co-workers are generally good to work with.

Cons

Too much favoritism. If you are a "pet" of the Mfg VP, you are golden, can do no wrong. Otherwise, watch your back every day. Management supports and encourages backstabbing, undermining others, selfish behavior. Every day you have to wonder about people's ulterior motives. There is a real lack of communication from the top down. "Suncast knows best" just do what we say, don't ask any serious questions. Upper management tolerates mediocrity if you have been there long enough, which discourages newcomers or people who really are motivated to try, til they see there is no point, since it doesn't matter what you do, but how well you are liked by the right people. Any improvements are superficial. If you try to suggest real improvements or changes, you are ignored until you go away. Best to ignore people who try to rock the boat with ideas. Lack of focus on any substantial goals. Every week it's a different plan based on whatever is the current flavor of the day.
