Pros

Decent pay and the opportunity to learn how NOT to run a plant.

Cons

I’ve read a lot reviews and I’ve noticed that the majority of the positive reviews have been by employees that work in office settings. Well I primarily worked in an office and I have a totally different view of TPC Group. There’s just not much positive to say about this company. I only worked there for a few short years and I came to find that the company thought of itself as a “world-class” organization while being run like a “third world” country. There were far too many upper management positions that were filled by unqualified personnel promoted from within. These are positions vital to safe and effective production. This small town “just give the job to Bob” mentality will make you a follower in this industry and domed to failure. It’s as if there was a rule in the company policy that restricted them from investing in the infrastructure of the plant. Many issues were brought to my attention from operations, but were not addressed because of a culture of “run to fail”. Issues were constantly being swept under the rug and eventually came to bite TPC in the rear. Behind closed doors, there would be a lot of finger pointing and blame placing when issues would arise…and believe me, issues constantly came up. It was almost like we were the Keystone Cops running around patching up leaks in a dam and running of of tape. The main problem was the company’s refusal to effectively mitigate the sources of our problems, and in stead choosing to treat the symptoms. The company is littered with too many problems for me to list. So I’ll try and make it quick. Major issues were the lack of operator training, the safety department, and depleted maintenance staff. TPC doesn’t have a competent training department or training program. New technicians are training newer technicians. The safety department is non-existent unless someone is hurt. Then there are knee-jerk reactions and protocols put in place to quiet the noise. There aren’t enough maintenance personnel like millwrights, instrumentation techs, or electricians to make repairs. Constant turnover is unfortunately the norm there. Many field technicians have started to look for employment with other companies due to what they call “an excessive amount “ of overtime. Recently, a group of eight new technicians were hired and resigned within a few weeks. If you need a job specifically for the purpose of having the experience to add to a resume, this might be an easy route to take. They’ll hire those with little to no experience. This worked out for me, as I am about to start a new job with a great company. Good luck.

Work In Procurement At Your Own Risk

Pros

Lots of good people who work hard and care about their job. Decent benefits.

Cons

Procurement leadership micromanages, does not appreciate the realities of leveraging and positioning in contractual negotiations, is overly focused on bidding relatively small work without regard to value and does not take the effort to know all of the work being done. The entire staff has turned over in 14 months and cannot get people to stay for the long term. Working long hours and weekends is commonplace. Look into the financial health of the company before pursuing a position. Operational challenges could be a concern.

Pros

You might just make international news! The pay is good, but you’ll soon find out why. Glad to have made it out safely. TPC Group faces $514,692 in fines from OSHA and is accused of three willful violations — the most severe and rare category used by the agency — after OSHA concluded its investigation into the November 27, 2019 plant explosion in Port Neches, Texas. On-site cafeteria has a salad bar.

Cons

Two major explosions have manifested in the past 2 years. Google TPC Port Neches to see a distillation tower getting launched into lower orbit. Very impressive. Second major explosion in the RD / QC lab in Houston. The lab relocated to a log cabin.
