Pros

Well known name in the legal industry. Good leadership from Managing Partner. Great views from the balcony. Some really nice fee-earners.

Cons

Management in some business services teams is toxic. Bullying of junior staff is tolerated and even encouraged (with promotions!). The firm doesn't live up to its values. Absolutely no opportunities for progression unless you're in the right 'clique'. Not accepting of different personalities or work styles. No meaningful training offered. Bitch-y atmosphere. No decent benefits and low pay compared to other firms. Evidence of unequal pay between people doing similar jobs and really poor female representation, hardly any female partners!

Pros

People are generally speaking quite friendly and easy to approach and talk to. There will be a few exceptions to this, however. Hours are not demanding, and people generally respect work-life balance. This is one of the best things of the firm. Free breakfast is also a nice thing.

Cons

Pay is at the bottom of the legal market. I don't think it can get any lower unless you aim for very small law firms. Your job satisfaction from a pay perspective will therefore be very low from the start. Bonuses are very poor. Pay rise is also very poor. Leadership and management is poor. Managers generally speaking don't know how to manage other people - this goes for both senior and junior managers, with a few exceptions. If something is not working from a management point of view, they will blame the individual attorney rather than reflect on their own behaviour. They do not care about your career and what you can and want to do. As long as you make money and serve the partners, that is all what matters. You as an individual - beyond that objective - matters little to none. Performance reviews are one-sided. It is only them commenting on your performance, and there is not a single opportunity for you to comment on the firm's performance. This is a great example of the above paragraph - the partners only care about themselves and how they are served. Although this is a common practice at many law firms, this makes it none the more good or acceptable. Junior people such as paralegals are given the bare minimum equipment needed to do their work. They are treated very poorly, however there may be exceptions of good treatment. They are clearly being taken advantage of - long hours and very little pay. This is not uncommon in the legal industry, but that makes it no more acceptable.
