Pros

Garden City is a nice place to live in rural Kansas. Cost of living is reasonable and people are friendly. Decent schools and restaurants. Many of the coworkers at the newspaper are friendly and helpful.

Cons

If you are a reporter, you will routinely work 12-hour days, including many Saturdays. Most previous reporters have quit because they had no lives outside of work. The editor arrives at work in the morning after the reporters arrive but is gone most afternoons because he is coaching his daughter's sports team and engaging in other personal activities while the reporters work during the day. Shortly after the reporters go home, the editor returns to work in the evening, makes editing suggestions to the stories then calls reporters at their homes to revise their articles online and to make calls to sources for additional information. Most of the sources cannot be easily reached because the work day has ended. This editing system is extremely inefficient, and the reporters end up literally working the entire day until bedtime because of this system. In addition, the editor wants the reporters to tell him where they will be after work, whether at the movies or eating out even though they are technically off the clock. If reporters log this overtime on their time sheets, the sheets are altered after they are submitted. Also, reporters do not get paid for mileage; they are simply paid hourly.
