Pros

+ flexible working hours + supportive software engineers turned into friends - makes workplace more fun + remote + company retreat (once a year) - actually is a great idea + good department improvements in the last 2 years - thanks to an engineering manager coming on board as opposed to the CEO leading department only. They pushed for what’s best for the team and company from day 1. However another recent growth in management feels like we have taken a step back (see below)

Cons

- new software management come across as “founder-pleasers”. They don’t stand up for our views even though they say they try their best to make it happen. I also find it hard to have genuine 1:1s and talk openly about what is going on as its not going to change anything anyway - when we had one manager, they had to juggle everything going on and things worked well. Now we have multiple engineering management introduced start of this year and things don’t work which is clear as many software engineers have left - we as engineers don’t have much to say regarding technical direction - you got to do what you are told, no space for innovation - career progressions do not exist. Instead of appreciation and internal promotion for your hard work, they will hire a contractor and leave you as you are. What is the point in trying your best if you can’t go anywhere anyway… - constant change of direction e.g. this week you are working on one thing, next week product and engineering goals have changed so your efforts change. And then they complain that your team does not deliver on time - micromanagement! We have definitely been more micromanaged recently. Constant pressure to deliver quickly, with your output closely tracked. It often feels like you have to compromise between quality and speed, and if you're not able to, you're considered "underperforming" - employees being let go without notice across all departments and on the spot - not good way to let people go.

Thanks for your honest feedback. We’re a fast-moving, evolving company and we know that comes with challenges. We’ve made changes in engineering to support scale, and we’re continuing to assess what’s working and what’s not as we evolve during an intense period of growth. We’re building something ambitious here, and getting it right means iterating not just on the product, but how we operate as a team. As we grow, more opportunity arises for career progression and we are committed to developing and retaining our best people.

Company that runs on fear and Toxic work culture

Pros

- Most people you work with are genuine treat to work with and are lovely people - Benefits like weekly paid meal

Cons

- Ran on an authoritarian campaign of job loss fear - Taking time for yourself on a weekend or late at night? wrong that's called company time. Last minute projects are key to this companies success so don't have plans because you are expected to work weekends and late nights to meet absurd deadlines with no compensation - Don't expect constructive criticism at best you will get "Try Again" and "Don't like this" so you'll constantly feel like a headless chicken just completely directionless - Company front of the pack in terms of competition but so focused on competitors it ignores real innovation - Expertise and knowledge of your skillset mean nothing if the Founders don't like it (and their wants change constantly), you will have your decisions over ruled constantly - The culture here is abhorrent if you want a taste just go look at the founders LinkedIn pages for quotes such as "Speed over quality" and "This is not a place for work life balance" - Feedback ignored, work culture has been consistently brought up as an issue and it is either overlooked at best or at worst doubled down upon by the founders in these "Don't like it, leave" style speeches - No clear progression - Legal minimum PTO for UK employees - No listed pay on jobs due to controversial "regional pay" and overall lacking pay in comparison to industry standards - Zero respect for your time and and expertise if you are not in the content department

Thanks for sharing your feedback. While this isn’t the experience we want anyone to walk away with, we also recognise that fast-paced, high-growth environments aren’t the right fit for everyone. TryHackMe has grown rapidly over the past few years, and with that comes pressure: shifting priorities, big expectations and a strong focus on execution. That speed has been a key part of our success, but we know it needs to be balanced with clarity, support and sustainable ways of working and that’s exactly what we’ve been working on. We’ve introduced clearer performance and feedback frameworks, are reviewing our time-off and compensation structures and are putting better systems in place to improve planning and reduce the last-minute pressures that can come with scale. The culture here is demanding, but for many, it’s also incredibly rewarding. We won’t pretend we’ve got everything perfect, but we’re building with intent and we care deeply about getting it right. Thanks again for your time at TryHackMe and for your contribution. If you're open to a conversation about your experience, we’re always keen to learn and you can reach us at people@tryhackme.com. Wishing you the best in what’s next.

Pros

100% remote Flexible working hours Team are really friendly and helpful

Cons

Micromanagement to an extreme has become present with the recent manager hires. Constantly being breathed down our necks. It makes you feel paranoid. I felt uncomfortable sharing ideas in the group chat without worrying that the manager will say something negative either in the group chat or in private. Even when the manager was off sick, it felt like they were still watching me, I would get message from them that said 'do not send anything to the others until I approve it first', which difficult since there was a deadline for the project and they were off sick. Poor career progression - every week you had to update Monday and Friday spread sheet on what projects you were doing that week and had to have a meeting with others giving each other the update. Plus every time the team clock out, we had to write a list of what task we did today and what we need to do tomorrow. if we did not do that, the manager will remind us. This again made me very uncomfortable and very paranoid that I felt like I was not doing enough compared to the others. Abrupt Redundancies: Employees easily made redundant without acknowledgment of their hard work. They will terminate you on the spot with not a care in the world. HR Team at the beginning can come across friendly, but you start to feel the tension later down the line. For example, being some-what force to have a company lunch once or twice a month online. I decided I didn't want to join (even though I thought I had a choice). When I let HR know, they ask me why and unless it's a good reason, what's the issue. That made me so uncomfortable and the bad tension to the point I gave in and said I would join, just avoid that question.

Thanks for taking the time to share this feedback. We recognise the concerns around management style, communication, progression and how certain internal processes feel. As we scale, we’re evolving how we lead, support our teams and build a culture that balances accountability with trust. We’re also reviewing our approach to offboarding and engagement to ensure people feel respected and supported throughout their time here. We’re not perfect, but we are committed to learning, improving and creating the kind of environment where great people want to stay and grow.
