Good work experience but long hours and fire-at-will mentality

Pros

Private Equity exposure. Some nice people and a few nice company events every year.

Cons

Long hours (mgt expects you to work and be available 24/7), it's a "work-hard, no play" environment. CEO has a habit of firing staff just before the Christmas holidays - you don't know if you're meeting him to get your annual bonus or a pink slip!

Pros

Salary is good IF you are willing to negotiate and advocate for your work. Opportunity to travel often. Office location is in the city and near commuter lines. A couple of fun events and conferences every year.

Cons

There is no concept of unplugging or work-life balance. You are expected to be on at all hours of the day, evening and night. Kinda negates the salary to be honest. If you do not live to work, this place is not for you. Perpetually understaffed, and you will have to take on other people's work often due to colleagues being swamped while still having all your work done on time (what is eating and sleeping?). HR "department" consists of one person, so expect delays in communication. At-will termination is a constant worry even if you are doing your best. Boys' Club-esque office politics have been a source of frustration in the past few years. I have watched some of the most honest and deserving colleagues get laid off just before the holidays. Your company runs on the backs of your employees - treat them with respect especially given how much they are required to sacrifice for you.

Pros

Good deal flow for investment professionals Interesting consulting-oriented projects for operations professionals Very strong returns in older funds Nice offices The culture is a good fit for some people, and there is a small group of very long-term employees Does not operate like a traditional growth investing firm

Cons

Does not operate like a traditional growth investing firm The Valor experience can be hit or miss depending on which partner you get aligned with and whether the CEO likes you Culture Fire at will mentality Decision-making process Compensation Work-life balance relative to peers Management Lack of career progression and mentorship High turnover for last decade Lack of autonomy Critical understaffing in key functions is a permanent feature of the firm, not a temporary bug Travel Select current employees asked to post 5-star Glassdoor reviews by management
