Incredibly Talented Organization with Growing Pains

Pros

+ The pay can be good, depending on your job + The staff are overall incredibly gifted and come from a range of experiences + The work can be cool and fun, you will not be bored + Management tries and can be responsive

Cons

- The pace can be very grueling - There can be a high level of turnover: both voluntary and involuntary - The culture can be murky re. how decisions are made. There overall are two sides of VentureWell: the one it wants to show (a diverse, inclusive, consensus-driven, democratic organization) and what it can be (pretty white, where decisions are made more by who you are than the validity of your argument). - There is not much discipline in the organization or a commonly understood goal - Staff are very Puritanical in their political beliefs. It creates a not very inclusive environment.

Pros

There are some wonderful, kind, dedicated people working at VentureWell.

Cons

The dishonesty began in the application process, where the nature of the work and the organization was intentionally misrepresented to me by high-level people at VW. VW is also inconsistent in what they offer to new employees, only some folks are permitted to work remotely, and there is no clear policy on how frequently you must visit the office. Extreme disorganization makes it difficult for new employees to know where to find files or even “know what you don’t know” about different programs. Management lacks the ability to take responsibility for anything, opting to scapegoat junior-level staff, often in front of coworkers, even if the miscommunication was handed down from management itself. The expectation is that employees will work obscene hours. Emails, slack messages, texts, and phone calls come in at all hours. Not answering, or trying to place boundaries on the hours you work only makes an employee lazy or less dedicated. There is no boundary when it comes to how managers speak to their employees. Calling out flaws in front of other employees, questioning abilities, interrogation-style check-in meetings, scapegoating, and a general lack of support is the norm. There is also little to no recourse for dealing with this behavior. Employees are expected to deal with it or work it out with the person that is frequently berating them at work. Additionally, there were no opportunities for growth or professional development. VW explicitly states that employee goals need to serve the organization first, and the employee second. And there is little to no time to actually work on developing skills because of the work load employees are expected to shoulder at all times.

Challenging work environment

Pros

Employees come from a variety of educational experiences and backgrounds. When a team works, it's great to see how all that diversity of experience contributes to the creation of amazing workshops and work products. The diversity of their portfolio of work also means it is never boring. Many employees are interested in making the workplace the best it can be- there's a lot of optimism in the air.

Cons

The fast-paced environment can be stressful, chaotic, and favor those who have assertive/aggressive (and sadly, sometimes bullying) personalities. Your experience really depends on where you sit in the organization- some people/departments are seemingly treated better than others.
