I have been working at Visier full-time

    Pros

    - A vision that we can all rally around - A great sense of balance between working hard yet still having a great personal life - Enough structure and training to give you a solid foundation yet enough freedom to innovate and do things how you best think they can be solved. - A culture that is collaborative and upbeat -

    Cons

    Nothing glaring comes to mind

    Advice to Management

John, keep up the transparency! It makes us feel empowered to know that the tone at the top is 'trust the employees to learn about the business, to try new things, to innovate'

I have been working at Visier full-time for less than a year

    Pros

I have been working at Visier for 1 year. Career: 1) Skilled contributors are quickly identified and promoted 2) Team and/or department transfers are encouraged and supported 3) Emphasis on co-op/intern success Lifestyle: 1) Company events are extravagant and fun 2) Wide array of snacks, beverages, fruit 3) Working from home occasionally is not discouraged Business: 1) Product is one of the most flexible HR analytic software today 2) Revenue growth is one of the fastest in Canada

    Cons

    1) Experience is highly dependent on manager/team 2) Too much is expected from strong individual performers 3) Some areas of codebase are questionable due to the emphasis on inexperienced co-ops

    Advice to Management

My personal experience is good but I am aware not every team is as fortunate. I would recommend management to: 1) Shift R&D resources into the more intensive teams. Some teams are worked harder than others. 2) Don't automatically promote skilled individuals to management. Not every good individual contributor is a good manager. 3) Enforce more stringent code reviews, code practices for co-ops/interns

I have been working at Visier full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Visier is a fast paced, even faster growth company. It has great potential as a big market player. Lots of opportunity for growth within the company. Although like many places, you have to look for it, as it doesn't just show up at your door.

    Cons

Hard to compete with pay against big firms from the Bay area.

I worked at Visier full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    * Willing to take a chance on UBC new grads. Treat out of province interns from Ontario colleges preferentially * Certain teams dealing with Spark, machine learning or new business ventures offer valuable career experience * In a hot space (HR analytics) with large lead in client acquisition. Strong business vision and industry connections, company will likely succeed long term * Company is in a period of larger user adoption, lots of opportunities for front end devs and Site Reliability Managers

    Cons

    * Laggy, frustrating code base due to tech debt * Existing tech debt and tendency to hire UBC new grads over experienced devs causes tech debt to accelerate with no one to take ownership of codebase or resolve existing problems * Besides founding team, very few devs with 3+ year tenure * Tech stack has not aged well (Angular + Play Framework), little to no resources given for transferable career development in any department * Unspoken expectation is 50 - 60 hour work week, with worse hours in SRE department * Below average salary with reluctant raises * Beatty location has cold and unfriendly atmosphere. Recent departures have shaken morale * Departments outside of development are openly treated worse in pay and recognition

    Advice to Management

The startup ship has sailed. If you take the value of IPO shares off the table, your compensation is far too low for the amount of tech debt handling and work you demand. For new grads who could not get into Big 4, this should be a lower ranked pick, the overwork and unattractive tech stack make it harder to interview prep. Still doable (many have done it here) but you are better off taking some of the ample free time at SAP to grind leetcode.

I have been working at Visier full-time

    Pros

Young and busy workplace, nice people. Revenue can still support the company.

    Cons

Heavy workload but pay is lower than average. Was pre-IPO company but not any more. Poor learning environment, people are just too busy to help even though there's a coaching program. Career opportunities depend on your relationship with the managers. Was a fun startup but not any more.

I worked at Visier full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Super professional company organization, structure feels fluid and meaningful. Company is run very cleanly. Regularly organized all hands meetings and semi-annual events. - Promotion/bonus structure is fair, which is pretty rare to see. - Teams that are *not* the SRE team seem to be well organized and well managed.

    Cons

    - A ton of office politics, bullying, and egotistical pushback that has to be dealt with just to resolve problems that should be basic. - There is a *huge* amount of pride from senior members of the SRE (formerly devops) team (Why? I'm not sure. There's literally nothing here to be proud of.) resulting in massive pushback for literally anything. - Progress goes at a snails pace. No one works together, no one is encouraged to work together. - Huge deficit in technological knowledge. Operating on technological assumptions that are 10+ years old is common. - SRE department is incapable of hiring anyone to resolve the above problems because the rampant egotism drives them out immediately.

    Advice to Management

What's going on on this team is not typical at other tech companies, don't let them fool you into thinking this is normal.

I have been working at Visier full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - smart, friendly, young, hardworking coworkers - free snacks

    Cons

    - mediocre managers - they will work you to the bone - they don't care about work-life balance - most employees are young so they are encouraged to work long hours (60-80 regularly) - employees are encouraged to "go the extra mile" for the company but see little praise or recognition (definitely not in compensation) - below average salaries - sub-par product

    Advice to Management

Learn from better companies, stop promoting a start-up environment while paying terrible wages.
