A missed opportunity to be disability friendly

Pros

I was extremely excited to work for the company when I got the job offer. The company is at the forefront of the industry and offers incredible exposure to various aspects that can serve as a formidable career foundation. The pay is competitive.

Cons

The office culture is toxic and slow to change. Meaningful diversity is does not exist. Company culture prefers men and childless women. As someone who required reasonable adjustments on health grounds, the company was inflexible. Staff would make disparaging remarks about my disability. HR would twist my words to make it seem people had concern and over my wellbeing. Worse of all, since I worked for them during pandemic lockdowns, it was clear I did not need to be in the office everyday; a medical assessment conferred that. The company disregard the medical report and made the environment hostile thereafter. The toxicity made me depressed. I recall looking outside of the window and finally understanding why corporate offices don't have windows that can open. Because I have a physical disabilities, I was excluded from team activities but was also regarded as extremely difficult for not engaging. However, I would talk to many people in other teams because they were kind and lovely. Small things like offering to help me carry items or hold the door open for me were alien concepts for my team. Since my health situation means my immune system is compromised, I was obviously anxious about going to the office daily when working from home was not provided. However, toilet facilities were not only disgusting but unfriendly to a disabled person. As I result I would hobble to a toilet on another floor that was barely used. I was injured in the workplace by a colleague, management did not care despite me taking sick leave. Within weeks I resigned, informing HR the company had no regard for my wellbeing. Furthermore, my sub-team manager was ineffective. There is no accountability. If you are not a company favourite or don't take the disparaging remarks without fuss, you may find it an unpleasant place regardless of how many additional duties you perform to the highest standards. There are other people I know who felt similar pressures, most of them come from 'diverse backgrounds'. NOTE: this my personal experience. This is not indicative of how other employees will be treated. However, if you are somebody who wants an office culture that is familiar friend and values employee wellbeing, please consider your priorities carefully. I have worked at other companies that have anonymous mental health facilities, allow hybrid working and do not expect you to work bizarre hours to accommodate international customers. I wish everyone good luck in their job search.

Pros

Job stability - seems like even by doing bare minimal you will still get an ok pay

Cons

The system does not reward proportionately to workers who actually contribute to trading decisions, simply because they are associated with the tech department, which is viewed as "IT" department. Tech department is saddled with middle management always coming up with redundant ideas that no one in the business wants and more importantly, no one fit to implement proper solutions. Anything valuable to the business being built by competent workers is immediately being preyed on by vultures who jump in to steal credit.

Hostile and no career growth

Pros

It looks good on your CV

Cons

They overwork you, underpay you, expect you to be on call even on the weekends and if you are anything other than a white male who is conventionally attractive, you will not be given advancement opportunities no matter how qualified, hardworking and ambitious you are. Everyone I knew who worked there at the same time as me, did not last more than a year. Fortunately, there are so many other companies with a far better attitude and will actively facilitate hybrid working rather than lying about it.
