Pretentious and Disappointing

Pros

Free coffee and food on shift. Average pay (London Living Wage), considering that they look to hire experienced hospitality professionals.

Cons

Advertise to have a lot of growing opportunities, in reality are extremely cheap on labour, would not promote people and expect you to take on more responsibility without extra pay (as well as demotes managers for convenience). Additionally, they keep a lot of workers on guaranteed 16h/week contracts that provides no more stability than a zero-hour contract, just ensures thay you give 4 weeks notice before you leave. The level of micromanagement (called brand standards at WatchHouse) makes you feel like you are working at fast-food place that pretend to be a Michelin restaurant. The head office tries to dictate what, when, and how you should do your job without an actual understaning of how the location works or consideration for staff. It seems like they have no trust for managers and aim to micromanage half a London full of coffee shops from the head office. At the same time, significantly lacks in providing support to the shop (e.g. Fixing broken equipment, finding new staff to cover for leavers) Lastly, greatly emphasises that everyone is replaceable. They never forget to mention that they have loads of people waiting for a job in any position. However, after someone leaves, takes more than three months to replace them.

A sinking ship

Pros

A few nice people who put up with the nonsense

Cons

The business is focused on blitzscaling for mass growth and doesn't care about its employees, senior management treats everyone below them as if they're expendable. Fake reviews are trying to boost Google and Glassdoor ratings. The HR team treats everyone like a number and not a human. Senior management tick boxes for their KPIs and don't understand hospitality or coffee. Toxic workplace culture with very high staff turnover. The business is happy to spend lots of money on expensive metal signage and brag about how much money that made crowd-funding but won't give anyone a decent living wage.

Poor management

Pros

· Free coffee and lunch · Most coworkers are lovely and helpful · Flexible shifts if you have a good manager

Cons

· Can be very busy and so hard to get support from head office when there is a serious lack of staff and so many important equiptments are broken · However when there are enough people to support the intensity of the work, the head office will ask you to reduce labour costs. Worst of all they would come round and take one of the staff away for a talk at the busiest time of the day and you can't expect them to do anything at all :) · Management's ambiguous attitude towards lazy employees who avoid teamwork is disappointing, even if you do more than you should, they just take it for granted · Depending on which branch you're in, you may have to deal with mostly rude and impolite customers on a daily basis and they never care about staff's mental health · Their coffee beans are becoming more and more ordinary and unsurprising so don't really recommend it to baristas who really care about coffee · Toxic corporate culture
