Last week, we hosted the first tour of our new, £45 million timber frame factory in Derby. A group of mortgage lenders and valuers including TSB Bank, Lloyds Banking Group and Nationwide Building Society, toured the factory to see how raw materials are taken from one end of the 200,000-square foot facility and placed on a giant conveyor belt, where wall and floor panels and roof trusses are put together by a combination of machines and skilled craftsmen. The Oregon timber frame factory is part of our plan to boost the number of homes we build using Modern Methods of Construction to 30% by 2025. The factory is currently able to deliver 1,000 homes a year and aims to produce 4,000 a year. Walking along the factory floor, the group had a glimpse into the fast and efficient system, which cuts and nails together structural frames with millimetre precision. Once the factory is up to full capacity, 25 timber frame kits a day will roll-off the production line on to trucks - leaving behind almost zero waste. #sustainability #banking #construction

International Men's Day (IMD) on the 19th of November celebrates worldwide the positive value men bring to the world, their families and our communities while acknowledging the challenges they face in today's society. This year, we are focusing on working fathers. We recognise how important it is for working fathers to be present in their children's lives and how it can be challenging to balance parenting alongside a thriving career. That is why, at Barratt, we offer supportive policies and resources to empower working parents. Tomorrow, to mark IMD, our gender equality network will be hosting an internal webinar open to all employees with ‘Inspiring Dads’. The session will focus on the benefits of parental leave for working fathers, and we will be joined by Mike Scott, Chief Financial Officer, and David Hesson, Regional Managing Director, who will share how they balance fatherhood and successful careers. If you are a working father and are interested in a career with us, visit our careers website here to view our latest vacancies. https://www.barrattcareers.co.uk/
Congratulations to Lauren Allan, Assistant Technical Coordinator from our North Scotland division, for receiving the ‘Rising Star Award’ at ‘The Trades Awards’ last week. Lauren joined the business in 2021 on our ASPIRE Graduate programme and thrived over the two-year programme through departmental rotations, professional development modules and cohort fundraising projects. After recently graduating from the programme back in July, she has impressively gone on to win the award soon after. Well done Lauren. We look forward to seeing your future growth as your career progresses and you continue to achieve great things. Last week, our 2023 ASPIRE Graduates took part in their first development module - ‘Personal Growth’. The intensive two-day workshop was designed to enhance their self-awareness by exploring their individual Myers–Briggs (MBTI) ‘personality types’, as well as how to effectively manage conflict, deliver effective feedback and engage in coaching conversations. Equipped with this understanding, our graduates identified ways to improve communication with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders and, based on their individual conflict management styles, evaluated their personal approach to managing difficult situations and conversations. We are thrilled with the collaboration, self-reflection and engaging discussions from our graduates. If you are interested in finding out more about our award winning ASPIRE Graduate Programme, please see our e-brochure below.
Today, we are recognising World Menopause Day in order to raise awareness, break the stigma and highlight the support available to improve the health and wellbeing of colleagues experiencing symptoms of menopause. The changing age of the UK’s workforce means that between 8 in 10 menopausal women are in work. With 3 in 4 women experiencing symptoms and 1 in 4 experiencing serious symptoms, we view menopause as an organisational issue which can impact colleagues both directly and indirectly. Our Chief Financial Officer, Mike Scott, has recently shared his thoughts on this important topic: “The menopause is often a subject people find difficult to talk about and as a result its effect on the workplace can be ignored – this is something we want to change. We are committed to making Barratt a great place to work, and so it’s important we make the space and time for everyone to increase their understanding of the menopause and how it can impact the working lives of our colleagues.” We have developed a dedicated online ‘Menopause Hub’ for our employees to access menopause related resources. The Hub features our comprehensive Menopause Support Framework, which includes 5-minute guides for both line managers and employees, educational materials on the menopause, related policies, as well as a wealth of support resources and apps we provide at Barratt Developments.
As we enter into October, we welcome Black History Month. The annual observance is not just about acknowledging the past; it is about embracing the present and shaping a more inclusive future. Throughout October, we will be celebrating the achievements, culture, and history of Black people. Taking the time to learn about those who have made significant impacts on our society and to highlight the ongoing journey toward racial equality. Mosaic, our employee network for colleagues from ethnically diverse backgrounds will be hosting an in-person breakfast event for all Barratt employees to join. The event will focus on forming connections, building understanding, and learning how we can better support each other at Barratt Developments. Together, we can build a workplace that celebrates diversity and ensures that every voice is not only heard but valued. #blackhistorymonth
World Dyslexia Day is this Sunday. At Barratt Developments we believe that dyslexia is more than just a learning difference; it's a unique way of thinking and processing information. We aim to create a workplace where the employees feel open to discuss their dyslexia and that they will be celebrated for their creativity, problem-solving, and out-of-the-box thinking. It is these unique skill sets that contribute towards our market position as the UK’s leading house builder. Internally we are hosting an interactive webinar ‘Managing Dyslexia’ which covers the intricacies of dyslexia, what it means for those who have it and the growing importance of creating a working environment that values dyslexic ways of thinking. Together, we can break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and embrace the unique abilities of individuals with dyslexia. #WorldDyslexiaDay #InclusionMatters #DyslexiaAwareness
