This week we have been collecting a fascinating array of objects that our teams use (or come across!) in their roles. From the practical to the puzzling, each item tells a story about the work we do in the public sector! We’re getting everything ready for our County Durham Public Sector Careers Fair next week. The morning is dedicated to schools and we will be welcoming pupils across the county in year 10 and above to a fun and interactive session. One of the activities? Match the object to the role! It’s a brilliant way to spark curiosity and conversation about the many career pathways on offer with the council. What role could be connected to a tortoise??

It has been a busy and exciting week in Children and Young People’s Services as we have celebrated the outcome of our Ofsted ILAC’s inspection. The report was published on Tuesday (13 May) and we are thrilled to share that our services for children and families across County Durham were rated as Outstanding. 'Caseloads have reduced; they are balanced and reasonable for most workers. Social workers have time to spend with children, their visits are purposeful, and they capture children's views about their lived experience. Social workers told inspectors that Durham is a great place to work. Their words and actions convey a sense of belonging and they view Durham as their employer of choice.' Ofsted, 2025.
We had an incredible day at the Forces Transition Group Live Transition Day on Tuesday! The Forces Transition Group plays a vital role in supporting armed forces personnel as they transition to civilian careers. Their mission is to help those leaving the military connect with new opportunities and navigate the journey to civilian employment. Our Resourcing team was thrilled to be there, engaging with service members who are exploring new career paths after their time in the army. We had meaningful one-on-one conversations with 18 individuals, and we're excited to continue supporting them as they explore opportunities with Durham County Council. Thanks to everyone who took the time to speak with us!
