Our technology teams build everything in-house ensuring a fast, efficient, and highly scalable open science platform customized to the needs of the research community. The teams are continuously innovating, using the latest custom-built tools and artificial intelligence to improve the way research is evaluated, published, and communicated. Frontiers’ Volunteers: Tutoring Pupils and Inspiring Careers Jennifer Pinnel, a journal specialist at Frontiers working in Cell and Developmental Biology, is one of many Frontons who have jumped at the opportunity to participate in charity activities; being able to offer her time and expertise due to the volunteering hours and flexible working framework that is available to our Frontons. Having benefited from similar programmes as a child, Jennifer got involved with Action Tutoring, a charity aiming to support young people who face socio-economic disadvantages with in-school tutoring sessions. Frontiers celebrates that there is much more to life than work. With Jennifer’s scientific knowledge and background, she is able to assist the research at Frontiers, whilst also having the time to give back to the community and support budding mathematicians; working to make education fairer. 2021 - a game-changing year in science. The coronavirus pandemic, our response, and our recovery will come to define this period in our history. From now on, there will be the prevailing memory of 2021 highlighting how science, and more specifically open science, delivered solutions for one of the biggest challenges we have faced. As well as publishing over 85,000 quality research articles in our portfolio of journals over 2021, all of which being freely available; we have also grown our team at Frontiers significantly. Frontiers currently has more than 1,200 employees over 14 locations globally and we look forward to our growth in 2022, bringing the best talent on board to help us achieve our mission of making science open to enable healthy lives on a healthy planet. ‘A sincere thank you to our authors, editors, reviewers, and staff for everything you have contributed and for believing in open science. Frontiers’ volunteers have always been at the forefront of community and societal responses. Liz Bowley, Director of Publishing Development, is one of our many Frontons who have gone out their way for charity, having taken on the grueling challenge of running a marathon in support of the National Autistic Society. For more than a decade, Frontons have been showing a great passion and big heart for the most pressing world causes, both as scientists and as citizens of the world. At Frontiers, we are committed to contributing to communities in a meaningful and sustainable way and encourage our people to participate in charity activities. So we can make a difference, each Fronton gets three working days per year to dedicate to volunteering, meaning you can run your own marathons, donate your time and support your community be it for local or national improvement. Frontiers was awarded the ‘Special Jury Prize’ at Vaud International Business Awards #PVEI 2021. Each year, the prize is awarded to one organization in recognition of their role in boosting Canton Vaud’s image abroad, creating jobs at home, and successfully contributing to the reputation and prosperity of the area.
