As part of Black History Month, we were delighted to launch our Ethnicity Inclusion Network Group. Network Chair, Folayo Osekita, shares his views on what needs to be done to create a working environment that offers support, guidance and opportunity for black and ethnic minority communities.

The event provided us with the opportunity to showcase some of the cutting-edge products designed and manufactured in the UK as well as our worldwide product portfolio. Many of our capability leads were on-hand to explain about our range of products and services focused on areas of security, deterrence and combat. Leonardo's experts also contributed to a variety of sessions during the DSEI conference, focused on aspects of the land, air, naval and cyber domains. In March this year the UK MOD published its Defence and Security Industrial Strategy that outlined the requirement for a new Medium Helicopter capability to be in-service by the middle of the decade to replace the Puma and in due course, three other helicopter types. Standing ready to answer this requirement is Leonardo with the AW149 Medium Helicopter. The company’s new multi-role helicopter offers the UK MOD the latest-generation battlefield platform, reconfigurable for a wide range of demanding missions in the most severe operational environments. Advanced platform and system technologies, equipment and weapons; coupled with unparalleled safety and performance, and high levels of survivability and crashworthiness; provides military customers with a highly effective, survivable and cost-effective helicopter capability. An Open Systems Architecture enables the rapid and low cost integration of new equipment to meet changing military requirements. Leonardo has an active AW149 supply chain and is therefore able to deliver 'Military off-the-shelf' aircraft in less than 24 months.
The UK Carrier Strike Group (CSG) is the UK's largest naval fleet since the Falklands and will cover 26,000 nautical miles, and conduct over 70 engagements in 40 different countries. Leonardo’s AW159 Wildcat and AW101 Merlin helicopters will keep watch over the carrier strike group, protecting it from sub-surface, surface and air threats. Heading up the CSG is the Royal Navy's Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier with Leonardo's Field Service Representative, Connor Flavell, embarked on-board to help maintain the Merlin Mk 2 Crowsnest platform the Merlin Mk 2 Crowsnest platform which carries out the fleet's Airborne Surveillance and Control (ASaC) role.
Poetry might not be the first medium you would expect an engineer to choose to convey their experiences to the next generation of engineers. However, it has proved to be the perfect tool for Leonardo’s Engineering & Projects Director, Paula Clarke, who released a poem to mark International Women in Engineering Day (INWED). With a message to aspiring engineers to be themselves and not to be afraid to challenge perceived barriers, the poem resonated with women engineers around the company who came together with Paula to present the poem in a powerful video.
An independent report produced by professional services firm, PwC, has confirmed the economic impact of the Tempest programme will be felt in every region of the UK, supporting an average of 21,000 jobs a year and an estimated £26.2bn contribution to the UK economy between 2021 and 2050.

Fifty years ago on 21st March 1971, a bright yellow Lynx prototype (XW835) took off from Yeovil. The now-iconic aircraft went on to become a world leader in the naval helicopter market and the helicopter is still flown by nine countiies today. Leonardo and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) are working together to bring the world-class protection offered by Leonardo’s #BriteCloud expendable active decoy to operators of the MQ-9 remotely-piloted aircraft system (RPAS). Developed at Leonardo's Luton site, BriteCloud is a next-generation decoy, protecting aircraft from the latest radar-guided threats. The world’s first, and currently only, such product proven to work effectively, BriteCloud packs sophisticated jamming technology into a package the size of a drinks can, allowing it to be fired from an aircraft in the same manner as a flare.
