“This is Joan Didion. I read her essay ‘The Santa Anas’ in high school and it was the first time I saw a woman writer infuse my two passions, journalism and creative writing, into a single piece. I found Joan Didion to be revolutionary because she worked her femininity into a masculine realm. She wrote about fashion and motherhood along with rock criticism and crime reporting. I wrote a stream-of-conscious essay inspired by her prose as part of my application for my master’s degree. I was accepted, and graduated with an MFA in creative nonfiction writing last spring.” - Lisa Di Venuta, Department Coordinator, Corporate Communications
