Here are your weekly insights from Viacom's Talent Acquisition team. This week, Daisy Auger-Dominguez, SVP of Talent Acquisition, continues to discuss her own experiences and offers advice advice on how to stand out in a sea of job applications. Do cover letters count? Or are they unnecessary? Recruiters are looking at hundreds of applications for one job. But when you have two resumes that look very similar and the cover letter is beautifully written, clear and distinct, that gives you an edge. Don’t just write a standard cover letter. I’m not saying use perfume or pink paper. I get a lot of LinkedIn requests and I don’t respond to a lot of them. But every once in a while I have a request that was so cleverly written and showed so much attention that I respond. Many times I tell them: I’m responding because your outreach was so thoughtful.

"There’s very little that’s remained constant in Red Fabbri's job since starting as the VP of fan engagement and social for Spike TV in the fall of 2016. The biggest change, of course, has been the network’s transition to Paramount Network, which will be official as of January 18. His challenge was to devise a strategy that would engage Spike loyalists as well as the broader target audience for Paramount Network. The result was the #GoodbyeSpike campaign, which played out across social media as a tongue-in-cheek drama where the personification of Spike goes through the seven stages of grief upon learning of his imminent unemployment." Here are your weekly tips and insights from Viacom's Talent Acquisition team. This week, Daisy Auger-Dominguez, SVP of Talent Acquisition continues to discuss her own experiences and offers networking tips. Job seekers are often told that the key to landing a job is networking. How can college students and recent college graduates build a network? Friends’ parents and their colleagues. Never lose an opportunity to ask someone what they do, how they got there and what changes they wish they would’ve made in their career and for what reason. Since people know I work in recruiting I often get asked, ‘What kind of jobs do you have?’ Asking such a generic question doesn’t help me help you. My question to them is: ‘What gets you passionate and excited? What was the last thing you created? Who is the social media person you follow? What are the commonalities in those spaces?’ That’s how you start figuring out what your career path is. When you have an opportunity to ask someone about their job, be as specific as you can. Generic questions give you generic answers.
