“Being an artist, I just liked to draw and to paint. My dad was a bus driver for 25 years. He told me to be a doctor or lawyer. Those were the rules, growing up as African American; That’s what you needed to do to get out of the ‘hood. My dad said I was never going to get paid to be an artist. I said, ‘I’m going to airbrush these jean jackets and sell them from the backyard and design business cards.’ I was the first kid in high school who wore a suit jacket and carried an attaché case. I would open up shop and try to sell my artwork. Then, when computer graphics came out I figured out my way in. At the time, my brother was a designer at Viacom. He said, ‘I can get you this opportunity to be an intern, but do not mess this up.’ I saw myself as a director and attached myself to some great mentors. They gravitated towards the excellence in me. I tell people no matter what background you come from, if you go for excellence, there is no statistical bucket that can catch you.” - Gerald Yarborough, Art Director, Nickelodeon Consumer Products

"I love coming to Viacom and doing what I do every day. I love that this company is filled with so many creative people from different backgrounds. I was talking to somebody yesterday who puts the ads up on the shows, and someone else who creates all the cartoon background artwork. I feel like no two people do the same thing here at Viacom, and I learn so many different things by interacting with the people here." - Rita Papadogiannis, Coordinator, Corporate Social Responsibility
